Charged with the general re- 4air, planning and maintenance of +,e University's properties, the -lant department is one of the major cogs in the machinery that 1uns the University. * * * THE MAJOR jcb of the plant department is to see that the buildings and grounds are kept in top-notch condition. The plant service has men stationed in all the major buldings on campus to' see that the buildings are cleanj and to make all necessary minor repairs. The grounds department has the job of taking proper care of the grounds during the summer and removing all the snow and ice during the winter months. The building housing the plant department is possibly one of the most active places on campus. Here can be found a large wood- working shop whose job it is to repair the countless chairs and tables that are returned damaged from the dorms and other build- ings and to build and design any necessary cabinets, bookcases and other special equipment. * * * SUPPLEMENTING the wood- working shop is the finishing de- partment which paints all signs, furniture and benches for the Uni- versity. The plant service building also houses a sheet metal shop, a plumbing department, a ma- chine shop and an electrical de- partment. The department includes a well- equipped repair shop in back of the building to keep the Univer- sity's large fleet of trucks, busses M * * * * * * * * * ATING PLANT SHOWS THE MAMMOTH SWITCHBOARD AND THE BATTERY OF GENERATORS f and cars in running condition. The shop is capable of handling all ma- jor repairs, according to Walter M. Roth, plant department super- visor. IN THE FIELD of new con- struction, the extension division is always kept busy. "At the - resent time, the supervision of the con- struction of the new South Quad occupies a great deal of or -tiine," Roth said. Also being built is a new park- ing lot near the Hospital to:belp alleviate the critical University parking problem. When . com- pleted the lot will have a eapac- ity of about 200 cars. "We are also installing a ,en- tral hot-water heater to replace the one now in use which has proved obsolete, Roth commented. The new system will provide hot water for all University buildings except East Quad addition, Uni- versity Terrace and new South Quad which heat their own water because the mains are too small to supply them from -the heating plant. One of the biggest arms of the plant service is the heating plant which last year consumed about 60,000 tons of coal in heating the campus buildings and supplying hot water and electricity to the campus.
