THE MICHIGAN DAILY " TUESIDAY, MAY 30, 1950 TUSA, A 0,15 Rusty, Rare Baby Crane Called Dead Loss Mourned By Bird Lovers AUSTWELL, T E X A'S,-(A)-- Rusty, the baby Whooping Crane, is believed dead. The little whooper,' newest of only 38 Whooping Cranes on earth, was missing yesterday from the Arkansas National Wildlife Refuge, 150 marshy acres near this gulf coast twon. JULIAN A. HOWARD, manager of the refuge, reportedi sadly that Rusty probably fell, prey to a snake, raccoon or vulture. Rusty was the pride of the Texas gulf coast. Ever since his parents, Joseph and Crip, began nesting, April 22, bird scientists had trained telescopes and field glasses on the marsh-grass nest, 13 hours every day. And bird experts were jubilant Friday when they first sighted Rusty. He was the first whooping crane ever born in captivity. For 13 years the U.S. Fish and Wild- life Service has striven to preserve from extinction the graceful, col- orful Whoopers - America's tall- est bird. They are four and one half feet tall and have a wingspan of seven and one half feet. * * * HOWARD made the announce- ment after a thorough, desperate, search of the refuge. He believed Rusty disappeared Sunday. There was a rainstorm Sunday morning, he said, and when the clouds cleared, Josephine was seen feed- ing Rusty with Crip standing nearby. Shortly after that, it became apparent that Jo and Crip were no longer tending a chick. They made feeding trips together at great distances from the nest. The fruitless tearch was started Sunday. Michener Favors Census Revision By The Associated Press Michigan congressmen are try- ing to get the Census Bureau to change the rule allocating college students to the city in which their college is located. Rep. Michener (R-Mich) told the Associated-Press he was con- vinced that university students should be credited to their home towns instead of the college towns. The State Legislature has pass- ed a resolution, asking that the Census Bureau reverse itself. The resolution notes that in Michigan, sales-tax funds are al- located on the basis of the Fed- eral Census. l'i OAV MICHIGAN DAILY Phone 23-24-1 HOURS: 1 to 5 P.M.
