EIGHTTE MICIGAN DAILY M'IAY, MAY: Tunnel-Builders PARTYING PANACEA: Hormones Help Dispel 'Morning After' Blues c ASSOCIATED PRESS POCT RENEW By RON WATTS Hormones that abolish hang- overs comprise the latest list of medical discoveries. Findings, recently presented be- for the Medical Society of the State of New York, lead to the conclusion that certain hormones injected into the human body can relieve hangovers, as well as kill an alcoholic's craving for intoxi- cants. * * * THE PAPER, presented by Dr. James J. Smith who is doing re- search in alcoholism, furnished the first definite evidence that al- coholism might be due to inade- quate functioning of the master pituitary gland. Following the injections of the Deadline Set for Engineers' Data Saturday morning is the dead- line for engineering senior data sheets, according to Bill Upthe- grove, '50E, senior class president. The sheets, which will be used for organizing the senior engi- neering class as a graduation and alumni unit, are available at tables in the West and East En- gineering Bldgs. and secretary's office, Upthegrove explained. The sheets will ask for the stu- dent's home address, activities, in- terests and vocational plans. Class dues not paid at registra- tion may also be paid at the tables, Upthegrove added. hormones ACTH and cortisone, all the symptoms of the alco- holic promptly disappear, ac- cording to Dr. Smith. He be- lieves that within five year's time, alcoholic patients will be able to drink normally. Dr. Smith originally attacked the problem of alcoholism from the traditional approach that it was a disease resulting from per- sonality problems, and that in es- caping reality the patient turned to alcohol. Later he rejected this idea for his present theory of met- abolic factors. * * * PROF. G. S. BLUM of the Bu- reau of Psychological Services be- lieves that Dr. Smith's findings must be viewed with extreme cau- tion. "The available data do not substantiate t h e extravagant claim that alcoholism is "due to" a disturbance in pituitary func- tioning and that the disease is re- lated to metabolic rather than to emotional factors," Prof. Blum as- serted. He believed there is no reason to discard the current view, based upon widespread clinical experi- ence, that psychological conflicts are prominent in turning people to drink.
