Kelly, Box 181, Gallen, Mich. )11N By CY CARLTON Sparked by shutout wins by Don! Mackay and Al Hetzeck, Michi- gan's tennis team came of age yesterday as the Wolverines gain- ed their 21st consecutive dual meet victory, beating Illinois, 7-2. The Illini, highly regarded after a 8-1 victory over Michigan State Friday, and an undefeated skein this season, were demolished by power of the Wolverines' top four singles players, and a Michigan sweep in the doubles. * * * MACKAY STARTED the rout by whipping Illini captain Bud Lit- tle, 6-0, 6-0, in a match that took less than an hour to complete. Mackay playing with robot like consistency was deadly on his serves and placements. Playing in the number three singles spot, Dick Lincoln came through with his best perform- ance of the season as he white- washed Gene Buwick, 6-0, 6-0. Playing against Sonny Bradley, Illinois' number two man and former state singles champion, Al Hetzeck measured up to his stern- est test of the season as he won, 6-3, 6-2. * * * IN NUMBER four singles, Mich- igan's Steve Bromberg had con- siderable trouble before overcom- ing Wilson Besant, 6-3, 7-9, 6-4. Bromberg was one point away from victory several times in the second set, which he finally lost. In the third set, he dropped the first three games, but came back to win three, lost one, and then won the final three to take the set and match. Michigan's five and six men lost their matches as Lenny Brumm and Ross Herron both dropped three set deoisions. * * BRUMM WAS beaten, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 by Jim Moses while Herron fell to Bob Bennorth, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. Handicapped by a strong wind, Herron's lob shots proved unsuc- cessful. In the doubles, Mackay and Hetzeck won the first match with ease as they beat Little and Bradley, 6-4, 6-3. Playing in perfect harmony, the Wolverine co-captains were never headed as both played precise, accurate tennis. Bromberg and Lincoln beat Bu- wick and Rennorth, 6-4, 6-3 in the number two doubles. Bromberg, obviously tired from his grueling singles match, faltered at the start and the Wolverines pair found themselves behind, 4-3. However; Bromberg finally came to life and ':e pair won the next three games to take the first set, and then won the second set handily. * * * BRUMM AND HERRON com- pleted the doubles sweep for Mich- igan as they came from behind to beat Moses and Besant, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Michigan's netmen return to ac- tion tomorrow when they meet Michigan State on the varsity courts at 2:00 p.m. State comes to town with a highly regarded aggregation and boasts victories over Notre Dame and Wisconsin. b'u0.O HELP WANTED Shutouts Highlight 21st Straight Tenis Victory DETROIT -- A single by Vic Wertz with the bases loaded in the eleventh inning scored John- ny Lipon and gave the Detroit Ti- gers a 1 to 0 victory yesterday over the St. Louis Browps.
