Under a new tournament set-up two teams from the West will meet the two best from New England ' and the East, and the race for the Western entry has. narrowed All men interested in play- ing :varsity baseball should re- port to the south end of the Feld House from.1:30 to 5:30 to sign up. --Ray Fisher down to the Wolverines, the visit- ing Bengals, and Michigan Tech with North Dakota still given an outside chance. * * * ' MICHIGAN will have the home ice advantage and the not too re- liable comparative score edge on common opponents, but the Colo- radoans have an excellent season's mark so far and will be up for this vital series. The Tiger's 14-3 won-loss rec- -ord with one tie includes a double triiumph over Brown, a win and tie with North Dakota, and a split of two contests last week-end with Minnesota's Go- phers. Michigan has beaten all' these schools twice. Heyliger is expected to stick with his new offensive setup, start- ing the flashy sophomore Earl Keyes with Captain Wally Grant and Bob Heathcott against the Colorado first line. * * * LENNIE BRUMM and the two scoring leaders, Neil Celley and Gil Burford, make up the other line of a double-barrelled attack that the Wolverines will throw at the invaders. Vic was well pleased with a new third line combination in the second Michigan Tech con- test. He shifted defenseman Ed- die May to a wing to combine with Joe Marmo and Paul Pel- ow. May will still be used at defense occasionally to spell the starting duo of Ross Smith and Graham Cragg, and another newcomer Louis Paolatto. * * * JACK MacINNES will handle the net tending chores in an effort to help snare win No. 14 for the Maize and Blue who have dropped but three thus far this winter. Tiger Coach Cheddy Thomp- son and his squad arrived last night in order to get in a work- out at the Coliseum. Thompson indicated in an in- terview that he would probably start Center Harry Whitworth be- tween wingers Ron Hartwell and Chris Ray. The latter two both pulled the "hat trick" in the first Minnesota engagement. Team Captain Mike Yalick and Jim Starrak will be his defense- men at the opening face-off with Goalie Clark Wilder in the crease. Starrak, incidentally, is a brother of Dick, a Wolverine standodt of last year. * By BILL CONNOLLY A history-making mile race, featuring miraculous Don Mc- Ewen, will set the pace for the Michigan-Illinois dual meet sched- uled to start promptly at 2:30 this afternoon in Yost Field House. Michigan's track coach, Don Canham, not one for making speculative statements, said yes- terday that: "Because it is the first time there Will be five men on the starting line who have run under 4:20 for the mile, this prom- ises to be the finest dual-meet mile in the history of Big Ten track.", STEPPING down from his fa- vorite spot, the two-mile, McEwen will face the Illini's Walt Jews- DON LAZI ..15 foot vaulter TRIPLE THREAT: Three Veterans Lead Iowa Tank Squad Against Michigan, By HUGH QUINN A trio of veterans-one swim- ming in each of the three strokes -will lead Iowa into tomorrow night's dual meet with Michigan. The three Hawkeye swimmers are Bowen Stassforth in the breast stroke, back stroker Duane Draves, and sprinter Rusty Garst, and together they form a top- notch medley relay team. * * * STASSFORTH was a member of last year's 300-yard medley re- lay crew that won the Big Ten, National Collegiate, and National Amateur Athletic Association out- door titles. He was second in the 200-yard breast stroke in the 1949 Con- ference meet, and was timed, at 2:20 for the event earlier this season. Draves, captain of Iowa's 1950 team, was the back stroker on that same triple-title medley team of a year ago. ,His best time for the 150-yard back stroke this year has been 1:37.7, but last season he set an Iowa Field House Pool mark of 1:35.5. DRAVES, A two-time All-Amer- ican, doesn't confine his efforts to the back stroke. He placed second behind Purdue's Keith Carter in the Conference individual medley last year, and in 1948 he swam on Iowa's 400-yard free style relay team that set the Conference long course record. Third member of the Hawk- eye's top trio is Ed "Rusty" Garst, a free style sprinter. Garst was on Iowa's free style relay team which last year set a new Big Ten mark at 3:29.2. P bury, Lawton Lamb and Bob Downs, all of whom have run bet- ter than 4:20 for the mile. The Canadian ace will team with Shel Capp and Aaron Gor-v don, Michigan sophomore who pushed Wisconsin's Don Gehr- mann to a 4:18 mile last Satur- day, and will probably have to run under 4:15 to win. Lamb is consistantly Illinois' best miler, running regularly un- TENNIS CLASSES FOR MEN -There are openings in the 10-12 class on Tuesday, and the 10-12 class on Thursday for men interested in beginning or intermediate tennis. -W. Murphy der 4:15, but he was beat last week by Jewsbury who set a new Illinois record of 4:13.9 for the distane. IN THE TWO-MILE, the fight- ing Illini will be represented by the rugged Jewsbury, who finished second in last year's Conference Championships. Facing him will be Michigan's captain, Jus Wil- liams. The Ilhini are equally strong in the pole vault, whre they have entered Don La, Dick Coleman and Dick Calisch. Laz has consistantly cleared 14 feet plus in competition and the oth- er two men have cleared 14 in practice, and have jumped 13- plus in previous meets this sea- son. Michigan's Ed Ulvestad, still re- cuperating from an appendectomy, and Tom Elmblad will face the top-notch competition presented by the Illini. FOLLOWING Ulvestad out of the University Health Service this week was hurdler Jim Mitchell, Michigan's best timber - topper. Mitchell will be teamed with Jim Atcheson and Don Hoover as they face Bob Hinkle, who took firsts in both the highs and lows in the Illinois-Ohio State dual meet last week. The Illini downed a powerful Buckeye squad, 73-41, in that meet to rank high on the list of Big Ten title aspirants. The contest was highlighted by an exciting quarter-mile race in which Hunter Gilbertson of Illi- nois turned on a smashing finish- ing drive to edge the Buckeye's highly touted Gene Cole, winning in 50.9 seconds. FACING HIM for the Wolver- ines will be Bill Konrad and Jim Ackerman. Konrad unofficially ran under 50 seconds on his quar- ter-mile anchor leg of the mile relay last week. Pre-meet dope sheets, figured on the basis- of last week's per- formances, give the Illini about a 10 point edge in the meet. But these figures do not even include McEwen in the mile, and if Canham doubles him in his favorite two-mile, the deficit may be counteracted by the efiorts of Don alone. Morrill Out Of Illini Tilt Michigan's Wolverines, prepar- ing for Conference champion Illi- nois Saturday, received another blow to their already waning vic- tory hopes yetct'a with the news that Hal Morrill, tall senior guard, Iwould be out of action with a bruised left heel. i ! Tonite at 7:30 the co-rec- reational sports program will be resumed for men and women students at the I-M Building. ID cards must be presented to participate. Ac- tivities continue until 10:30. I Ill He also placed in both the 50- and 100-yard sprints in the Con- ference last year, and has been timed this season in :23.3 for the 50 and :52.5 for the 100. AS A MEDLEY relay team, this trio has not yet swum together, although Stassforth and Draves swam on last year's team, with Ervin Straub on the free style. That regular medley team set the Iowa short course mark of 2:53.5. Wolverine Coach Matt Mann has a few antidotes for this Hawkeye trio. For instance, John Davies has been timed at 2:19.9 for the breast stroke, which is faster than Stassforth has done. And Michigan's Bernie Kahn is not far behind Draves. Kahn's time this year is a scant three- tenths of a second slower than Draves,' and Dick Martin's time for the 50 is just that much be- hind Garst's. Michigan has three men who are capable of swimming under 53, seconds in the 100. . .. / ' Ezi! 111 1 1 1111 1111
