Easter Bonnet Time Nears Fashions Suggest Roaring Twenties Even back in the good old days when grandpa twirled a mean mustache, the members of the feminine sex always managed to steal the show in the annual Eas- ter parade with their competition as to the springest hat and gown in town. Hemlines have been hiked up and down, bustles have returned and disappeared, and still milady manages to be the center of at- traction in the parade of fashions, regardless of how slicked up her escort is. The members of the stronger sex have finally bowed to the competition and nowadays the women have the limelight all' to themselves. * * * THIS SPRING will see a collec- tion of hats, dresses and shoes which seem reminescent of the rare and roaring twenties, but still the fashions of 1950 have a trademark all their own. The suit, basis of many a feminine ward- robe, is currently being seen in' checks and solids ranging from the pastel hues to the ever popu- lar darker tones. Bustles are on the rebound as are big and square pockets, Skirts are still slim and straight, but the hemlines are rising, as are the hopes of men, as more and more of the feminine leg is revealed. Suits are even making their ap- pearance in the line of date dress- es, with bolero jackets being shown as compliments to darker sleeve- less dresses. The standard basic dress, in lighter shades, has long been a necessity in every coed's closet. With simple lines and the ability of being altered with vari- ous accessories, this type of gown may be worn for all occasions' ranging from the most casual to dressy events. THE MAJORITY of hats which will blossom forth this season are closefitting to the head and a de- finite compliment to the shorter hair styles being seen. Shiny straws and panamas are at the head of the list of ma- terials being used, heavily decor- ated with the gayest of spring flowers and fruit. Ribbon and ti -A ad t fh i final tainh to Co tton Makes Dressy Debut This Spring King Cotton, long an outstand- ing personality in the world of playclothes, has finally come into his own in the way of styles for dressier and more formal occa- sions. When the Paris designers, long looked to womankind as the rulers of the fashion world, recent- ly presented their new spring col- lections, old man cotton was clear- ly evident on the scene. MAKING ITS debut a few years ago as a fabric worthy of mentiei for outfits other than playclothes, cotton has rapidly grown in popu- larity with the coming of each new season. This year will see cotton plaids which feature a cross pattern of gold bars giving the material the appearance of ancient brocade. This fabric is being widely used for dinner dresses which feature the ever-popular off-the-shoul- der neckline and the newly shortened hemline, 16 inches from the floor. The higher hem- line is softened by a low fullness of the skirt, while the neckline dips to a deep V in back. For this definitely new and dif- ferent look in necklines, many of the women of fashion are wearing necklaces backwards so that the medallion. falls down into the V. * * * GOLD THREADS are also being woven into other cotton materials such as white pique. Many dinner suits with lowered waistlines and slim tailoring are being shown in this fabric. With the shorter length eve- ning gown making its appear- ance on the fashion scene, yellow pique cut in the sheath fashion of the twenties, is being featured. To add a more graceful aid ele- gant look, panels of confrasting hues fall from each hip. Cottons with a silk-like sheen, plus the lighter weight materials, are all being introduced to the world of higher society with adap- tations making it suitable for all occasions. * * IN ITS MORE familiar field of casual and playclothes, cotton is proving a's popular as ever before. Low waisted box jackets which reach almost to the length of the shorts themselves are being shown in pastel shades which are in def- inite contrast to the shorts of a darker shade. The jackets feature long sleeves and high necklines bounded with pointed collars, and large square pockets decorate the hips. The peddle pusher and longer Bermuda shorts which reach practically to the knees are also proving popular among the members of the fashion world. For classes and casual dates, warm weather dresses in light and summery pastel solids and.plaids are currently in the limelight. frina r- s n ramloanif- am nn .'4 4. The latest in spring shoe fashions are shown above. For formal occasions, the black lattice work shoe is popular while the pump with the medium heel and low cut on the sides is a favorite for a somewhat more casual outing. The medium heel is also featured with the sling back making a neat looking shoe to wear with summer suits. Wedges and loafers maintain popularity this season while strapped sandles, as those shown on the far right, are in vogue and dome in a variety of colors.
