Main By PAUL BRENTLINGER "We'll put ruffles on the top and bottom with satin in the mid- dle!" So said Judy Loud, '50, as she put the finishing touchs on the lower part of a king-sized bathing suit. Miss Loud is a member of the sizeable crew of campus wom- en who are sewing costumes for the "ladies" chorus of "Lace It Up," the 1950 Union Opera. Needles, thread and creative in- stincts run rampant in a tiny room deep in the recesses of the Union's fourth floor. Costume headquarters for the Opera, the room looks as if it might be the Ann Arbor counterpart of Madame Schiaparelli's famed Parisian stu- dio. * * * IN CHARGE of this bevy of seamstresses is Mrs. Emmie Mel- lencamp, who designed the Opera's female costumes. Her series of colored sketches of the costumes manages to keep the artistic tal- ent of her crew in the proper channels. But each artisan is allowed to use her own imagination to some extent. This maintains in- terest at a high level, in spite of the fact that much hard work is involved in turning out filmy attire for a gang of masculine chorus girls. "I love to make hats," Doris Harold, '53, declared as she flipped a final feather into place on a blue creation. Miss Harold uses an old lamp-shade as a model for her hats. STRUGGLING ALONG without a lampshade was Joan Precht, '50, who also "likes to make hats." She was modeling a little Mexican number while being interviewed. Harem gowns were the spe- cialty of Mary Staples, '50. "This harem work is very interesting," Miss Staples said. Irene Gonckowski, '51 BAd, was busy with some sort of flimsy transparent material, which she was fluffing into another sort of shape. She too "enjoys the work here." * * * A LARGE CARTON in the cen- ter of the room contained nothing but "curves." These bits of padding will be inserted in the proper SL To Send Stenn to I.U. Irv Stenn, '51, chairman of Stu- dent Legislature's Better Business Bureau, will represent SL at the Midwest Student Government Conference March 23 to 25 at In- diana. Stenn was appointed by the SL cabinet to attend the conference which will consider "The Respon- sibilities of Student Self-Govern- ment." Representatives from nearly all midwestern colleges and universi- ties will attend the meeting which will be divided into nine workshop groups to study specific phaes of student life. r~ Cousins' Spring Highlight A fashion style that promotes itself.
