THE MICHIGAN DAILY THIIxsnA, -Daily-Wally Barth BAIT CASTERS-Dave Jahsman, Charles Rank and Frank Wes- terwelt (left to right) practice catching imaginary fish on North Hall lawn for fly and bait casting class. These unusual activities attract many comments from spectators. * * * * Casting Class Captures Many Curious Glances Three-Deck City Carport Opens Today To Be First Lot IMunicipally Run Hundreds of students, local cit- izens and both state and out-of- state city officials are predicted to be'on hand today at the formal unveiling of Ann Arbor's new $290,000 three-deck carport, at First and Washington Sts. Starting with an open house at 2 p.m., festivities will run until shortly before midnight. An elab- orate program of entertainment has been drawn up by officials and local businessmen, featuring rooftop dancing, speeches and band music. UNDER CONSTRUCTION since last winter the structure, described as the first such municipally op- erated building in the United States, has facilities to handle 240 to 260 cards. Parking service will begin tomorrow. Mayor William E. Brown, Jr., will open dedication ceremonies at 7:30 p.m. following a series of band numbers by the Ann Arbor High School Band. Two local orchestras have been scheduled to provide dance music for young and old from 9 p.m. till midnight. Weather permitting, the carport's top deck will be used for the dancing.-. In case of rain, couples will "cut' their rugs" on the second deck. He noted that the combined parking system and the city-oper- ated parking building are "firsts" nationally. Both comprise the lat- est unit in Ann Arbor's $630,000 automobile parking system, he said. CHICAGO-The ratio of doctors and population has changed great- ly, says The World Book Encyclo- pedia. In 1850, there was one doc- tor for every 572 persons. Today, there is only one doctor for every 764 persons. By EDWARD LANNING For those who have been won- dering about those men fishing on the North Hall lawn, the answer has been found: they are members of the University's fly and bait casting class. The course, initiated in 1947, is given during the last six weeks of the spring semester, without credit. Its aim is practical - to teach better fishing. The equipment used is owned by Prof. Karl F. Lagler, of the zool- ogy department. In past years Prof. Lagler has taught the course himself, but this spring it, was di- rected by John R. Bassett, '49. * * * STUDENTS and the instructor are plagued by such questionsas "How are they biting?" "Are you getting your feet wet?" and "Why are you fishing out here?" One day, someone in the Dental School sent a nurse to inquire the num- ber of the course. Disappearing plugs have cre- ated an annoying mystery. The half-ounce weights used by the bait casters are easily flicked off the line. Bassett said, "They are lying in the tree on the lawn, out on State Street, or even in the Dental School labs." One of the favorites pastimes of the would-be fishermen is to cast at women passing by. "That is why we dons use hooks," said Bassett. THE COURSE IS a popular one, even among upper-classmen and faculty. Among those auditing it this spring was Prof. Walter J. Emmons, assistant dean of the en- gineering college. In the past the women, too, have had fly and bait casting classes. Bassett stated that in gen- eral they catch on much faster than the men. No one managed to fail the course, Bassett revealed.
