' TWO 'FETE micnlgxN Miry WEDNESDAY, MAY 25, 1949 5 UNIQUE EXPERIMENT: 'U' Conducts Integrated Study of Japan S* * * * * * * * * / 2 ! By EVA SIMON A unique experiment in the in- tegrated study of an important world area is being carried on at the University's Center for Jap- anese Studies. Under a staff of experts in eight University departments, the Cen- ter seeks to give graduate students an extensive knowledge of all the social sciences and humanities as they apply to Japan. * * * A LIMIT OF 10 graduate stu- dents may enroll in the course in any one year. The students work for a Master's degree in Far East- ern Studies and at the same time study in one department of the social sciences or humanities in preparation for the Ph.D. degree. The Center offers courses in the anthropology, economics, fine arts, geography, history, language, literature, sociology and politics of Japan. In addition, each student must participate in a continuing re- search seminar coordinating all these fields. An extensive library on all phases of Japanese life is being de- veloped. MOST OF THE students at the Center plan to continue research or teach after getting their Ph.D. The Michigan Alumnus Half-price for Seniors Only $2.00 for the next year FOR SALE -Daily-Don Howe GO WEST, YOUNG MAN-Thomas Wilds (left) and Victor Muramatsu, students at the Center for Japanese Studies, point at "Seto Naikai," the Japanese inland sea, where the Center plans to set up a field station for research. Financed by the Carnegie Foundation, the Center has set up an inter- departmental program of studies on Japan for graduate students. Every student is required to write a dissertation based on field wor * * * degree. Others want to enter the diplomatic service. A few will ap- ply their training in the army, the business world or journalism. Need for a program of Jap- anese studies was accentuated during the war, when the gov- ernment was handicapped by.a lack of qualified experts on Ja- pan, as well as other parts of the world. After the war, the Social Science Research Council, with Prof. Rob- ert B. Hall, of the geography de- partment, as chairman, conducted k in Japan. * * * r a survey of world area studies in the United States. The councilrecommended that different departments of a uni- versity should combine their spe- cialized knowledge to conduct re- search covering every aspect of an individual world area. COLUMBIA University was the first to follow the Council's sug- gestion by establishing a Russian Institute. Other universities fol- lowed suit, and in 1949 the Center for Japanese Studies was set up at the University of Michigan. Language is one of the major difficulties confronting students at the Center. All of the students obtained a basic speaking and reading knowledge of Japanese during the war in army and navy Japanese language schools, and many served as interpreters and translators during the war. They found, however, that using Japanese research materials pre- sented an entirely new problem, as each period of Japanese history made use of a different language style. This requires the student to take intensive courses in Japanese lan- guage before he can make use of the Center's research materials. The Center plans to establish a field station in Japan as soon as negotiations with the American occupation authorities can be completed. Every student will be expected to write a dissertation based on field work in Japan. Starts Thursday- Continuous from 1 P.M.
