THE lE 1V1cXN DX Y1 TUESDAY, MAY 24, 1949 JUST AS THE COMMERCIALS SAY: Local Laundries Banish Housewife's Washday Blues S* * * * * ** * * By JACK BARENSE Washday blues are non-existent for those who have further com- mitted themselves to the modern world of specialization and mass production by ,contributing their, ? k few pounds of laundry to the tons which weekly flow through Ann ,x>/ Arbor's commercial laundries. The modern laundry plant is a far cry from the individual house- wife's meager utility room with s a small washing machine, iron and ironing board., * * * A SUPER-WASHING machine which handles 350 pounds of laun- *. dry at once-compared with 8 to 10 pounds for the domestic ma- chines - constitute the basic equipment for any laundry, ac- cording to M. Dalitz, manager of one of the local plants.> r 9 FOR SALE He explained that their opera- tion was merely a matter of pushing the right buttons, in cluding adjustment for the right temperature and soap solution to correspond with type and color of the fabrics being washed. A modern laundry plant usually has a large unit which purifies and softens all its water, Dalitz said. "Water is processed," he said, "until its hardness is zero, which is softer than rain water. AS FOR PURITY, a bacteria count of water which was already used to rinse clothes revealed that it was even lower than city water." The enigma concerning how a large laundry manages to re- turn to each of its customers the same clothes it received from -Daily-Carlisle Marshall FLAT IRON-Above is shown one of the huge stcam-heated machines used in an Ann Arbor laundry to iron the not-so-fancy items such as sheets and towels. Each of the six rollers exerts a pressure of 580 pounds. * * * them was explained away by Dalitz who said two methods are used. The first consists of stamping each piece of apparel with a code number where the mark will not show. j } Susterka Lake0 HAYRI DE ARIE Swimming and Picnic Grounds Large Hall . These are tagged for identification purposes. * * * "NETTING MAY be used trhiH tect the stamped clothes too," said Dalitz. "It minimizes wlearing and possible tearing by the machines." Laundries have eliminated the housewife's problem of where to hang the washed clothes to dry by using large "'tumblers" in which the dripping materials are rotated for about 20 minutes in a 160 degree temperature. Another headache for many housewives is ironing their hus- bands shirts. To a modern laun- dry this seems to be no particular * * * problem. Two women using special steam presses can turn out nearly a shirt a minute, according to the plant manager. * * * DALITZ said that the biggest saving for students who send outf their laundry could be accom- iplshed by taking advantage of what he called the "student bundle plan." Instead of pressing all the clothes inclosed the laundry only finishes the shirts and handker- chiefs. These are charged for by the piece while other items like towels, and pyjamas are "fluf dried" and charged for by the pound. "Laundry bills of people who use the special system often are 50 per cent lower than they would ordinarily be," Dalitz said. BABY PARAKEETS which can be easily trained to talk-$6.00.
