PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, MAY 15, 1949 Graduate Outing Club Meets Today To Elect Officers SHADES OF H. G. WELLS: Insect Killers Bear Ingenious Devices Members of the Graduate Out- ing Club will meet at 2:15 p.m. today at the northwest corner of the Rackham Building prior to embarking on their usual Sunday afternoon activities. A short business meeting to elect new officers will precede the outdoor portion of the day's program. CLUB PRESIDENT Hugh Gun- del invited all "hardy grad stu- dents with red blood coursing through their veins and a love for the beauties of nature-in- cluding the female ones-" to par- ticipate in today's activity. lie emphasized that coeds are especially welcome to join the club, mournfully pointing out that at present there is "a de- plorable ratio of ten men to every woman in the Club." Gundel explained that club ac- tivities may include anything from chasing hot dogs to hedge- hopping or swimming, depending upon the wishes of the member- ship. TWO WEEKS AGO for example, members of the Club went on a canoe trip up the Huron River. The crew of one boat decided to determine how much they could move about within the canoe without tipping it over. "The water was very cold," ac- cording to Gundel, one of the boat's occupants. The remaining two members of the underwater craft were conspicuous by their absence at last Sunday's swimming party. "We haven't given up all hope for them yet-they are both long- winded," Gundel commented. xpw 94o BOOKS For the Best in Bookbinding at a price you can afford OLSEN'S BINDERY X25 E. Office Equip- ment Service Co., 1116 So. University. 1lB By NORM MILLER As deadly as any of man's de- vices for destroying insects are nature's own killers. The most famed of these insect eaters is the Venus Fly Trap. * * * FACULTY MEMBERS will see this plant in the Hall of Biological Principles' new displays from 3 to 5 p.m. today. Among the new exhibits is a group of models of insect-eat- ing plants, including the Venus Fly 'Trap, with a model of a dead fly trapped within the plant. Paddle shaped leaves grow from the stem of this plant, and are hinged together like a clam shell. The hapless fly attracted to the plant, because of its odor and coloring, rests for a moment be- tween the opened leaves. * * * SPIKE-LIKE hairs grow from the center of the leaves, and when the fly inadvertantly touches one, the leaves pull together and the fly is slowly crushed to death. The plant releases digestive juices, and when it completes its meal, the remains of the fly are ejected. Growing in swamp areas of Michigan and other states is an- other vicious insect killer - the pitcher plant. Instead of crushing its prey to death, the insect is drowned. . . * HORN-LIKE leaves grow around the stem of the plant, and collect rain water. Insects attracted to the plant fall into the horn leaves. In case the insect is not immed- iately drowned, nature has pro- vided the plant with down-point- ed hairs which keep the insect from climbing out of the trap. It is believed the reason these plants trap and eat animals is to replace a deficiency of nitro- gen in the swampy soil where these plants usually grow. With all his superior faculties man traps, his animal enemies much the same as there carniver- ous plants. Fly-paper is not much of an improvement over the sticky droplets of the sundew. Comic books and pulp maga- zines to the contrary, there are no authenticated accounts of man- eating plants. Weekday Matinee 2c * Today Nights Sundays 35c '& Monday * Senior Dues Deadline Near Tomorrow is the last day sen- iors may pay their two dollar dues at one of three booths located on campus. Only those who have paid their dues are invited to the senior picnic at the fresh air camp June 9. The booths, open from 10 a.m. to noon, and from 1 p.m. to 3, will be situated at the engineering arch, on the diag, and in front of Angell Hall. Seniors planning to go on the senior cruise may also sign up and make a ten dollar deposit. DOORS OPEN DAILY 1:15 P.M. -Daily-Wally Barth INSECT KILLER-Mrs. Fay Rennie holds in her hand a life size model of the Venus Fly Trap. In the case is an enlargement of the plant with a model of a dead fly clasped in the leaves. The exhibit is part of a new display at the Hall of Biological Principles of the Museum building.
