MAY 13, 1949 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PARSE THE MIC~IIGAN lATIN ..~q - V FraternitySoftball Enters Semi-Finals V -- Dorm League Softball Titles Determined Williams House and Hayden House won their league champion- ships in last Monday's feature Residence Hall contests. Strauss House and Adams House copped championships in their re- spective leagues earlier. The play- offs are slated to begin soon. THE HARD-HITTING Williams nine used ten hits to run up a 9-2 victory over Vaughan House. Johnny Pielemeier handled the pitching chores for the victors. Hayden had more trouble dis- posing of a stubborn Michigan House crew, 4-3. Both teams scored all of their runs in the second inning. Highlight of the game was the pitching duel between Hayden's Johnny Biery and Bruce Agee of Michigan. Agee gave up nine hits, while Biery only allowed three; however, Agee seemed to be able to come through at most of the crucial moments. In a free-hitting game, Lloyd Houseadisposed of Strauss House, '7-2. Although behind 6-0 at the end of the first two innings, Hinsdale House staged a belated comeback, and beat Allen-Rumsey House, 9- 6. Phi Dells, A lpha Sigs Vie For Title Playof f Berth The semi-finals of the frater- nity softball playoffs will be staged next Tuesday and Wednesday af- ternoons. In the upper bracket, Phi Delta Theta will oppose Alpha Sigma Phi in a game which pits good pitching and fair hitting against power. In the lower bracket, Bob Schmidt's Sigma Phi Epsilon will tangle wtih Dick Hadler's Sigma Phi outfit. THE PHI DELTS battled their way into the semis with a 10-6 win over Theta Chi in the quarter finals. Bob Vernier held the oppo- sition in check in all but the fifth inning when he was touched for five big runs. However, the winners had already sewed up the game in the early innings. Alpha Sigma Phi gained its right for a shot at the cham- pionship with a loosely-played 13-8 win over Zeta Psi. Sigma Phi Epsilon once again benefitted from the excellent pitching of Bob Schmidt and gained a 5-1 verdict over Sigma Alpha Mu. * * * THE PRESENCE of a pitcher who had already tossed twotno- hitters undoubtedly worried the losers who played creditable ball while losing. Sigma Chi's smashing 17-0 win over Alpha Phi Alpha was highlighted by the stellar pitch- ing of Dick Hadler and two long home runs. It was Dick's second consecu- tive shutout, having notched a no- hitter against Sigma Alpha Epsilon last week. Nathan Van Osdol and Doug Ferguson supplied the home run punch. THE CLASH between Sigma Phi Epsilon and Sigma Chi will be interesting indeed. Both teams have top notch pitching with Bob Schmidt and Dick Hadler regarded as two of the best pitchers who have performed this year. Bob will have to face the bats of a Sigma Chi team which has scored 32 runs in its last two outings. In other games of the week, Phi Sigma Kappa took the measure of Phi Sigma Delta, 5-3, Chi Phi slaughtered Alpha Tau Omega, 17-6, and Kappa Sigma outscored Pi Lambda Phi, 13-11. In the only other contests, Jerry Wingeart pitched Lambda Chi Alpha to a 6-2 win over Omega Phi Psi and Phi Gamma Delta ripped Theta Chi, 14-7. DO YOU KNOW . .. that when Northwestern's 6-ft. 4-in.
