TWO 'THE MICHIGAN DAILY _______ SUNDAY, MAY 8, 1949 Examine Army Camp as Site For Shipherd Leaders of the self-styled "rebel" group of Olivet college faculty members were examining a gov- ernment - owned former Army camp at Sacketts Harbor, N.Y., yesterday as a possible site for the new college which they hope to found. According to Associated Press dispatches, newly appointed pres- ident Alvin S. Johnson and James A. Richards, chairman of the com- mittee to found Shipherd College, were consulting with architects on the cost of converting the camp's barracks into classrooms. IF THE CONVERSION costs should prove excessive, however, the group will be forced to look elsewhere for a site, Johnson said. The move to establish a lib- eral arts college to be named after the original founder of Olivet, John Jay Shipherd, was initiated a month ago by a group of faculty, students and alumni of Olivet. They began their campaign after seven faculty members were fired last fall reportedly for their "ultra liberal" views. DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETIN 11 V HELD OVER!
