Vies For Prize in 'Architecture A February graduate of the Ar- chitecture College has qualified for the finals of the Lloyd Warren Competition which offers one of the most hotly contested for stu- dent prizes in the country. Peter Frantz, now living in Sag- inaw, has successfully passed the first two stages in the architec- tural contest being conducted from New York. The final prize, for which he will compete with eight others, will be two years study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. It is commonly known as the Paris Prize. Professor Ralph W. Hammett of the Architecture College has been chosen by Frantz as his sponsor. Prof. Hammett will re- ceive an architectural problem from New York which Frantz must solve during the week of May 9 to 16. A few days ago the final prob- lem was to design buildings for the United Nations. Guild Director Manages Two Groups * * * * A man with a double barrelled responsibility-that's the Rev. H. L. Pickerill. Mr. Pickerill directs student ac- tivities for two church groups at the Congregational-Disciples Guild House on Maynard Street. * * .* THE DIRECTOR was sent to Ann Arbor in 1934 by the national church board of the Disciples Church to watch over church af- filiated students. During the war the Congregational group merged with the Disciples.' "We've been going strong ever since. And the two churches are closely related in doctrine so there seems no advantage in splitting up the two groups," Mr. Pickerill said. The strong spirit of cooperation which characterizes the guild has left its mark on the campus. * * .* "DURING THE depression we helped students in need of finan- cial aid by providing them with sleeping quarters in the guild house where they did their own cooking," Mr. Pickerill related. Mr. Pickerill, who has watched the devlopment of cooperative liv- ing on campus, is a quiet voiced, white haired man always ready with a joke. He is known to stu- dents and fellow chaplains as 'Pick". BORN IN DECATUR, Ohio, Mr. Pickerill took his professional training at the University of Chi- cago and Columbia University. For a time he was national director of youth work for the Disciples of Christ Church. Be- fore coming to Ann Arbor he taught courses in religion at Texas Christian University. "Pick" manages to utilize every square inch of floor space at the crowded guild house. The top pro- vides quarters for Mr. and Mrs. Pickerill and two women students who assist in managing the house. * * * THE BASEMENT floor provides student offices, a work room and a small chapel. And even the gar- age has been converted into an office. "But we manage to pack in all the students who participate in the guild activities each week, in- cluding almost 100 on Tuesday for the tea. Some make it their home on campus," he declared. Pharmacy Post Given To Stocking Dr. Charles H. Stocking, '09, was appointed dean of the pharmacy college effective immediately by the Board ofRegents, at their regular monthly meeting yester- day. Dr. Stocking has been acting director since July 1, 1947. BEFORE JOINING the Univer- sity faculty in 1920, Dean Stock- ing was dean of the Kansas City College of Pharmacy from 1910 to 1911 and of the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy from 1912 to 1917. Two other faculty appoint- ments, both for the 1949-50 ac- ademic year, were approved by the Regents. Dr. Wolfgang F. Stopler, on the Swarthmore College faculty since 1941, was named an associate pro- fessor of economics in the literary college. JOHN WESLEY REED was named an associate professor of law in the Law School. Prof. Reed is now on leave from the Univer- sity of Oklahoma Law School on a graduate teaching fellowship at Columbia University Law School. The Regents also accepted gifts amounting to $30,644.66. The larg- est was one of $5,000 from the Kroehler Foundation, Naperville, Ill., for research in wood tech- nology. 'Kitten' To Star In Radio Play "The Discontented Kitten," third in a series of children's dramas will be presented by the radio di- vision of the speech department at 6:45 p.m. today over WPAG. The story concerns a kitten who wanted to learn how to fly and all his troubles. Included in the cast are: Mar- ilyn Scheel, Barbara Conner, Ed Johnston, Norman Rappaport, Barbara Cress, Pat McKenna, Mary C. McCarty, Marian Gold- stein and Al Samborn.
