Dorr, who had replaced second sacker Bill Bucholz in the sixth inning, broke up a wild hitting battle in which the lead had see- ,awed back and forth several times before the payoff blast. WALTER "BCD" Rankin went the route for the Wolverines and although hit hard in the early part of the game, set down the Irish with only one hit in the final four frames.' Third baseman Ted Kobrin shared hitting honors with Dorr by collecting three doubles and two, singles in his five trips to the plate, and driving in four runs. Notre Dame jumped to a four run lead in the top of the second inning. First sacker Dick Giedlin led off with a single off Bucholz's glove. Bob Machado sacrificed him Four members of Michigan's track team left this morning at .6:30 for the Penn Relays. They are Bob Sergeson, Rod Warren, Art Henrie and Bob Thomason and will represent the Wolverines in the sprint medley relay. to second and was safe himself when Rankin threw late to second. After Ken Kozlik had walked to jam the sacks, Dick Maher and pitcher Walt Mahannah follewed with sharp singles to right to drive in three of the tallies. Maher scored later when Jim Gillis hit into a double play. THE WOLVERINES roared back in their half of the inning with five hits including a triple by Jack McDonald and a double by Ted Kobrin. "Lefty" Hal Morrill started the rally with aone-bag- ger. Bob Wolff and Rankin also chipped in with singles to give Michigan three runs. In the third of the Wolverines forked into the lead with a two run outburst. Ralph Morrison opened with a one-base smash to right. After Morrill unsuc- cessfully tried to sacrifice, Ko- brin drove out his second two- bagger to score the lanky right fielder from first. Kobrin crossed the plate a little later on a field- er's choice. The Irish knotted the count in the fourth on a walk to Machado, a sacrifice, and another single by Maher. MICHIGAN came back to take a one lead in the fifth on an in- fild single by Morrill and Ko- brin's third double, a long fly that fell just inside the left field foul TH S T-HIR TS- - - line. The lead wasshort lived, however, as the Irish bounded back with three runs in the top of the sixth. Machado started the uprising with a ground single to left. Kozlik then sent a hot grounder to McDonald who bobbled with the result that everybody was safe. Maher sacrificed both run- ners along and Irish hurler Walt Mahannah drove in both of them with a smash over third base just out of Kobrin's reach. Mahannah tallied later on a one-bagger by Pete Koblosh. From then on Rankin settled down and the Irish were through scoring for the day. The Wolver- ines counted single markers in the sixth and eighth to send 'the con- test into extra innings. * * * KOBRIN WAS once again the big noise in tlie sixth. He chased in Willard Baker from third with his fourth hit of the day. Baker had reached the base paths on an error by second baseman Kozlik had scampered to third on a walk and a fielder's choice. In the eighth Morrison com- pletely fooled the Notre Dame infield by laying down a bunt and racing to first before the bewildered Irish could recover. Morrill sacrificed him to second and then Kobrin came through again with his fifth hit to drive in the tyiny run and set the stage 'for Dorr's climatic blow in the tenth. Dorr's four-bagger nearly rolled to the tennis courts in right field, but he barely beat the frantic throw from the Irish outfielder. It appeared that the throw had beaten the speedy infielder, but the catcher did not have full con- trol of the ball. Both ball clubs committed three errors in the rather loosely played game. The Wolverines garnered 14 safe blows off Mahannah who toiled the full .game for the Irish.
