Fisher Worries
At three o'clock this afternoon
baseball coach Ray Fisher and
sixteen of his charges will board a
bus and embark for Lafayette, In-
diana where they will meet Pur-
due on Friday when they officially
start the 1949 baseball season.
The first series of Conference
games will find Michigan still
testing its strength. So far this
season, according to Fisher, it is
almost impossible to know what
can be expected of the Wolverines.
THE PITCHING staff, braced
by Dick Smith and Bill Taft, has
been the one real bright spot of
the spring training. The fielding
has been ordinary, no better and
no worse than the usual calibre of
Wolverine squad, but the hitting
has been woefully inadequate.
Lefty Hal Morrill is currently
turning in the best job of hitting
for the club, blasting three circuit
blows during the training trip.
Fisher is taking sixteen men
on the Purdue trip, including
five pitchers. The pitchers mak-
ing the trip are, Dick Smith,
Bill Taft, Dave Settle, Bob Hicks
and Bud Rankin.
Also going are infielders Hal
Morrill, Jack McDonald, Bill Buch-
olz, Ted Kobrin and Bob Wolff;
outfielders Willard Baker, Ted
Berce. Leo Koceski and Vic Fry-
ling. Captain Hal Raymond and
Pete Palmer will make up the
catching staff.
THE WOLVERINES will be
meeting a Purdue squad that is
very much the same as it was last
year. The Boilermaker outfield is
the same as last year but the in-
field positions of shortstop and
third base will be different.
Michigan will meet sturdy Mel-
vin Henson, the Number one Pur-
due pitcher. It was Henson who
last year struck out ten Wolverine
batsmen. In last year's series
Michigan and Purdue each won
one game with Art Dole pitching a
shutout in the opener for the Wol-
verines.
