* Th MIA~iAN DAILYV WEATHERMAN EVEN COOPERATES: I Winter Carnival H1ailed as Olaiidiig Su~ceeSSI Last week's below freezV~i tem- peratures brought a warm re- sponse from Winter Carnival com. - mittee members. Pat McKenna, general co-chair- man, Nancy Culligan and Marilyn Jones, publicity, agreed that even the weatherman cooperated to make the winter sports frolic a, success. "LOAFER'S LOFT," the Carni- val dance, was a sell-out, they re- /ported, and the ice show climaxed the event despite the last minute disappearance of Silver King Blair Moody's crown. The February 2 and 3 dates for the Union-League sponsored Carnival, which stirred up some controversy, were selected, Miss Culligan explained, to avoid conflict with exams, rushing and J-H~op. K The committee expects 'the 1949 -event to establish the Car- nival as a tradition. "It should be held annually for at least three years to establish it," Miss Mc- KCenna suggested," Phi Gamma Delta earned the highest total score with Delta Upsilon second. Ice-carving hon- ors were split between Mosher- Jordan and Kappa Del~ta in the Women's contest and Winchell House and Phi Gamma Delta. in the men's division. Give Conert HeeFriday Vladimir Horowitz, distin- guished pianist, will give the eighth concert in the current Choral Union Series at 8:30 p.m. Friday in Hill Auditorium. NOWV IN HIS twentieth concert season in the United States, Horo- witz was horn in Kiev, Russia, the son of an electrical engineer. Al- though hie demonstrated musical talent at an early age, Horowitz was not hailed as a child prodigy. Morowitz took his first piano Icssons from his mother, and at twelve began studying with other teachers, lie later grad- uated from the Conservatory in Kiev with. the highest honors. In 1920, when he was 16 years old, Horowitz made his concert debut in Kharkov. His success was immediate and in the following years he made European tours which included practically every country on the continent. Concert tickets are on sale now at the University Musical Socie- ty's offices, Burton Tower.
