6 TW 0 THE MICHIGAN DAILY THURSDAY, MARC 17, 1949 ' HAVEN NOT A DOG POUND: Humane Society Caire2 for LostPes DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETIN By FD STLBERFARB The Humane Societ y, located on Barbour Road, is fast becoming known throughout th- Washtenaw animal community as a haven for fauna.. Although the Society in the past has accepted pigeons, squirrels, and sheep, its main function is the care of dogs and cats. TuE DESCRIPTION of a, log turned over to the Socity is 1'e- corded in the files. It is then given an examination and its tempora- ture is taken. The animal is kept for as long a time as space will al- low, until its owner comes to claim his pet, or until a. prospective dog owner should come to adopt it. If the time siould come to de- stroy a dog because of crowded conditions or because of incura- ble diseases, gas is used on the animal. This method, which takes only ten seconds to reaet on the dog, is considered the most merciful. To adopt a canine a family need not go through a procedure as complex as is required by a baby- adoption agency, but nevertheless it must prove its intention and capability of giving the dog a good home. THE COUNTY branch of the Society is managed by three stu- dents, Jack Marshall, '50E, who is the Humane Officer, William Pie- lou, Grad., and Mark Lewis, a stu- dent at Michigan State Normal College. It is administered by a board headed by Dr. Edward Kraus, former dean of the literary college. Marshall, a student in engi- neering physics, says that there are many misconceptions which people hold concerning the Hu- mane Society. "First of all," he said, "it is not a dog pound. It is a charity or- ganization, not associated with the City or County." "Secondly," he added, "we are not dog catchers. We are not au- thorized to pick up stray dogs. THE SOCIETY has had many ..nusual jobs to perform. Marshall recalls the time he received word Publication in The Daily Official Bulletin is constructive notice to all mnembers of the University.
