Luther Purdom, director of the Bureau of Appointments and Oc- cupational Information here, will 'U''Alumnus Appointed as PhoeniX Head Dewey Fagerburg, University alumnus and prominent Chicago attorney, has been appointed chairman of a three-state region in the Michigan Memorial-Phoe- nix Project campaign which will be launched in the fall of 1950. Fagerburg will organize Mich- igan alumni in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin to assist in raising funds for the establishment of the atomic research center on the Michigan campus. THE RESEARCH center, which will be dedicated to University alumni and staff who lost their lives in World War II, will con-j duct and correlate research in the natural and social sciences so that atomic energy can be utilized for peacetime use. Discussion of the project will be included in a talk today by University Vice-President Rob- ert P., Briggs at a luncheon- meeting of the University of michigan Club of Chicago. Chicago Symphony To Present Lastin Concert Series Sunday The Chicago Symphony, under the baton of Fritz Busch, will de- liver the final concert of the Choral Union Series at 7 p.m. Sunday in Hill Auditorium. Third oldest organization of its kind in the United States, the Chicago Symphony has been for years in the forefront of the na- tion's major orchestras. FOUNDED IN 1891 by the late Theodore Thomas, it is in its 58th year of continuous existence. Conductor Busch, born in Siegen, Westphalia, in 1890, first acquired world-wide re- nown as conductor of the Dres- den Opera, from which he re- signed a lifetime contract in protest against the rise of Hit- ler. His first performance in the Vnited States was in 1927 when he was guest conductor of the New# York Symphony Society. Since 1945 he has been a conductor for the New York Metropolitan Opera. IN JANUARY, 1947, he was guest conductor of the Chicago Symphony for the first time in Orchestra Hall and repeated his leadership last summer at Ra- vinia.
