THE MICHIGAN DAILY THURSDAY, MARCH 10, 1949 __r momm PRESIDENT: Papers Reveal Angell's Activities as Statesman minister plenipotentiary and en- voy extraordinary for the U.S. government. While in China, he was suc- cessful in negotiating a new Chinese immigration treaty. He also tried legal cases in China and wrote regulations for the courts. Among his papers is a letter' revealing one of the greatest po- litical scandals of his day. It is a copy of a letter from E. J. Phelps, the American minister to Great Britain in 1888, to Lord Salisbury, the British foreign min- ister, asking him to recall the' British ambassador, Lord Sack- ville, who was accused of trying to influence the vote in the U.S. national elections. * * * LORD SACKVILLE had been carrying on a corresondence with a mysterious character who wrote under the pseudonym of "Murch- ison." This correspondence, pub- lished in the New York Times, was calculated to influence na- turalized Americans of Irish-Brit- ish descent to vote for Cleveland. Though the identity of "Mur- chison" was never discovered, Sackville was recalled for his "diplomatic indiscretion." Angell kept in his papers the treaty which he helped negotiate with Canada in 1877 as a mem- ber of the Anglo-American com- mittee on Canadian fisheries. The treaty was not passed by the Sen- ate. Angell knew most of the great statesmen and writers of his day. Among his papers are letters from Theodore Roosevelt, Grover Cleve- land, McKinley, Matthew Arnold, William James and Oscar Straus. 'U'Concert Will Need Mandolinist The University Symphony Or- chestra needs a mandolin player. Conductor Wayne Dunlap is searching the campus to 'find someone accomplished in this art to play in the symphony, "Das Leid von der Erde" (The song of the Earth) by Gustav Mahler which will be presented March 30 in Hill Auditorium. AS A CONDUCTOR, Mahler worked all his life learning the varying possibilities in instrumen- tation; Dunlap said. "So "The Song of the Earth" requires an especially versatile orchestra -in- cluding a mandolin." In the University Orchestra's performance the soloists will be Prof. Harold Haugh of the School of Music and Arlene Sollenberger, instructor in the School of Music, Students interested in playing the mandolin for this symphony may contact Wayne Dunlap, 704 Burton Memorial Tower. Ijnsiness Machine Talks Underway A seven-hour lecture and dem- onstration series on Machine Ac- counting Methods is being offered here this week for advanced ac- counting students. More than 135 business admin- istration students have voluntarily signed up for this course taught by D. N. Knowlton of a cash reg- ister manufacturing firm. The course deals with a phase of in- ternal accounting that cannot be adequately taught in books or in the classroom, because of the need for expensive machines and highly specialized instruction, according to Prof. Leo A. Schmidt.
