THE MICHIGAN DAILY WEDNESDAY, MARCH 0, FALL STAFF MAULED: Jokers Slash Flag Halyard In Unexpected Night Attack Local proponents of the prac- tical joke have once again per- formed the ancient feat of cutting the halyard on the University's much-maligned flagpole. . A motley assortment of tattered rags greeted classroom-bound scholars Monday morning from the Mall where the flag usually eaves. Aims of Clinic Will BeTold The functions of the Univei- sity's Heredity Clinic will be ex- plained at an open meeting of the Society of Sigma Xi, honorary engineering society, at 8 p.m. to- morrow night. Participating in the program will be four members of the Clinic's staff. Professor Lee R. Dice, who is director of the Labor- atory of Vertebrate Biology, will relate the history of the Clinic and some of its purposes. Operation of the Clinicewillebe discussed by Dr. James V. Neel. Dr. C. W. Cotterman and Dr. Harold F. Falls will discuss two current research studies on he- reditary diseases. Where GOOD STUDENTS Meet for GOOD FOOD Open Daily 7:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. Closed Sundays THE PRANKSTERS apparently ->erpetuated their time-worn skullduggery sometime S undiy night between the regular two- hour rounds of the University watchman. University plant department officials must now arrange to acquire a new halyard and the services of a steeplejack to in- stall it. "This same stunt has been repeated too often to be funny any longer," one official said. "It costs money to replace these halyards year after year." Officials said that since the war there had been a decrease in the frequency with which the trick was performed. Even now, _ however, they take the precaution of tying the free end of the flag- pole halyard to the roof (f the Nat- ural Science Building when ever there is an initiation or athletic contest which might stimulate student activity. THEY WEREL unprepared for the recent onslaught because scheduled events for the weekend indicated that it would be a quiet one. Discovery of the pranksters is considered imminent as several pieces of useful evidence were left by the careless jokesters. Officials suggest that the offenders lessen the severity of their punishment by surrendering before they are apprehended. Nurse's. Corps Positions Open The Navy Nurse Corps has an- nounced several Detroit area po- sitions open to graduate registered nurses. To qualify for Ensign's commis- sions, applicants must be graduate registered nurses, single and be- tween the ages of 21 and 26. In- terested persons may obtain fur- ther information by contacting Office of Naval Officer Procure- ment, 949 Book Bldg., Detroit. If selected, new appointees are sent to one of the large Naval Hos- pitals for a 6-week indoctrination course. Nurses will not be assigned foreign duty until they have com- pleted at least one year's duty in, the United States. RELIGION IN LIFE WEEK CAPTAINS-Irma Eichhorn and Bill Miller are the student co-chairman of this week's religious emphasis program in which religious aspects of university life are being discussed in the classroom as well as in chapel services. They are working with over a hundredt student committeemen to produce one of the biggest such programs on a college campus. Miss Eichhorn is past president of Assembly, Miller is former SL vice-president. nd iana polis Grp Tio Make Local Debut Sunday at Hill British Gains Called Rapid By Cartwri'ght With the help of Marshal Plan aid, British economic recovery seems to be progressing faster than anyone ever thought it would be, according to Prof. Dorwin Cartwright, who has recently re-' turned from a visit to Britain. Prof. Cartwright, director of the Research Center for Group Dy- namics, traveled as a scientific "ambassador" in an attempt to foster international cooperation in thc field of sociological research. MOST OF HIS work was done with the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations in London. The Tavistock Institute edits the mag- azine "Human Relations" in con- junction with the University's Re-! search enter. Both groups are en- gaged in similar research in social problems. England's big problem, ac- cording to Prof. Cartwright, is the question as to what will be the long range effects of"bu- reaucratic organization on a large scale. "Labor party leaders are con- cerned with how to maintain the democratic participation of the ordinary man in a society organ- ized in such large units," Prof. Cartwright said. COMMENTING ON the British version of socialized medicine, Dr. Cartwright said that doctors ap- parently are finding the plan to be better than they expected. "Public satisfaction with the medical program and the general economic situation indicates that the Conservatives will have a tough time winning an election for some time," he added.
