FIUDAY, JANUARY 7, 1949 ;Paul Bunyan Dance Tomorrow Will Feature Music by Strong T HE MICHIGAN DAILY I Couples representing, each school will be pitted against each other in the intermission contest of the annual Paul Bunyan "For- mal" which will be presented from 9 p.m: to 1 a.m. tomorrow in Wat- erman and Barbour Gyms. At last year's Foresters blue jean "Formal" four men and their dates manned opposite ends of a cross cut saw in a log bucking contest. The first team to cut through the log took the prize, and the Paul and Pauline Bunyans of that year really made the sawdust fly. THIS YEAR'S contest prize will be credit coupons for both par- ties of the team. Program chair- man Don Powell refuses to dis- close any information about the entertainment. Special attraction this year may be the appearance of Clyde Yeadon, creator of the new Peul Bunyan comic strip now ap- pearing in the Detroit News, who has been invited to the dance. Yeadon himself is a lumberjack of some 265 pounds. Tickets will remain on sale in the U Hall Booth from 8 to 5 to- day and part time-at the extra Union and Administration Build- ing ticket booths. For those who haven't yet scraped up the ready cash tickets will also be sold at the door. IN ADDITION to the tradi- tional Bunyan attractions of for- est greenery, ample refreshments, and the unrevealed contest, the dance will also offer spruce cor- sages to match the blue jean for- mals, free black and white contact prints, and colored prints. Benny Strong, Chicago band- leader, whose hotel type of dance music with versions of fa- vorite old songs has rated him recent popularity, will be the music master. The American Legion Ballroom will be the site of a formal din- ner-dance given by Phi Kappa Tau in honor of their pledges. Doug Lent and his orchestra will supply music for dancing. TONIGHT MEMBERS of Gamma Phi will bring to their guests a bit of the nostalgia that comes with spring. Theirs is an informal party based on the outing or picnic theme. Floors in the house will be covered with the traditional picnic blanket. A record dance will reign in the background while coffee and spudnuts are to be served before the fire-place. If the weather per- mits, there will be an ice-skating party beforehand at Burns Park. Following dinner at the Union the Lambda Chis will hold their pledge formal at the chapter house. Decorations will center around the old English Wickshire Inn theme. Cliff Hoff's orchestra will pro- vide dance music. DURING INTERMISSION the madrigals singing group, composed of house members, will perform and some of the other brothers will put on a radio skit a 'old English times. Refreshments will be served to guests from a large steaming wassail bowl. Members of Triangle are keeping their fingers crossed and are hoping that Old Man Weather will "come through." They have planned a sleigh ride for tonight and fear that it may, of necessity, be transformed into an informal record dance at the house. Ken Norman's orchestra will play for an informal party to be held at the Sorosis house in honor of their pledges. At 11 p.m. a buffet supper of coffee and sandwiches will be served. PHI DELT PLEDGES will be honored at a formal to be held to- morrow evening at the house. Johnny Harberd and his orchestra will provide the harmonious background. The pledges have planned elab- orate decorations around an outdoor snow scene theme. The stairway will be transformed into a ski slide and skiing equipment will be strewn around the roams to create the proper atmosphere. The windows will be covered with silhouettes of skiers. Favors will be in the form of Phi Delt paddles with pro- grams attached. Hard times will be the theme of the party given by the Theta Delts tomorrow night from 9 to midnight. Decorations will follow the theme and a jukebox will supply music, for dancing. THE AKKs will hold their pledge formal at 9 to midnight to- morrow night following dinner at the house. Sigma Delta Tau has planned an informal party for tomor- row evening based on the theme of the currently popular song, "Buttons and Bows." Entertainment will be furnished by some of the coeds.
