SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1948 T-E M-IIGAN DAILY "'MM..... Red Hot AL Race Thrown Into Triple Tie' Jrom iL G I A N T S TAN D By MURRAY GRANT. .. Daily Sports Editor TRYING TO PICK the winners has developed into a national pastime as everyone tries to compare himself with the experts and say to his neighbor, "See, I told you Oshkosh would beat South State by three touchdowns." And your columnist isn't any different. He's going to go out on a shaky limb about this time every week and see if he can do as well as some of you and perhaps give you a looksee into the weekend's top games. * * * * MICHIGAN-MICHIGAN STATE-A couple of like attacks meet on the gridiron of Macklin Field, one intent on continuing an unbeaten skein, the other equally intent on upsetting the favorites and establishing itself as a national power. But this guy is going to stick by his guns and pick Michigan by 20 points over the Spartans. Michigan, 27-7. MINNESOTA-WASHINGTON-The mightiest line in the Big Nine meets a comparatively strong Pacific Coast foe in an intersectional clash. The Golden Gophers need passing, but even without it they should romp over Washington, 19-7. INDIANA-WISCONSIN-Last year's second place Badgers have been strengthened by a fine crop of sophomores and should have an easy time with Indiana and her new coach, Clyde Smith. The Hoosiers are surposedly one of the weaker clubs in the Big Nine so it's Wisconsin 28, Indiana 0. NORTHWESTERN-UCLA -- Another big intersectional en- tanglement with a strong Wildcat club meeting the Uclans out on the coast. The Northwestern backfield of Don Berson, Frank Aschenbrenner, Art Murakowski and Tom Worthington should be too much for the Bruins. Northwestern by a 21-13 count. OHIO STATE-MISSOURI - The scourge of the Big Seven meets an- other supposedly weak Big Niner, but the Big Nine is still the strongest conference in the land and Wes Fesler wants to get off on the right foot. Ohio State eking out a close one, 14-13. CALIFORNIA-NAVY-The Middies have a new coach in George Sauer of Kansas fame and a little less murderous schedule, but California is touted as a Rose Bowl favorite. Lynn Waldorf has done wonders with the Californians in his two years as coach. It's a tough one anyway you look, but we're going out on that shaky limb of ours and are picking Navy in an upset, 20-14. ILLINOIS-KANSAS STATE-The easiest one on the docket. Illinois may not sweep through the Big Nine with plenty to spare, but they certainly have more than a woeful Kansas State eleven that is Sporting a 26 game losing streak. Illinois by a 40-6 margin. IOWA-MARQUETTE-Dr. Eddie Anderson always comes up with a good club and the Hawkeyes can't be counted out of any race. They should take the measure of Marquette in their opener, so we'll give this one to Iowa 21-7. VILLANOVA-ARMY-Villanova proved that it was going to be one of the powers in the East last week with a rousing 35-14 victory over Texas. But Earl Blaik seems to be headed for another banner year at West Point, so we'll stick by the Cadets and pick them to win a close one in one of the best games of the day. Army 28-Villanova 20. PURDUE-NOTRE DAME-We've saved this beauty for last since it's the tastiest morsel on the menu. Purdue has a veteran aggrega- tion and is one of the best in the Big Nine. Notre Dame has Frank Leahy and a good backfield. Their line will be strong and the Boiler- makers are in for plenty of trouble. But don't sell Stu Holcomb short. He's done a great job at Purdue and he may pull that big upset. -a SPORTS, PRES HOLMES, Night Editor Frosh Eleven Sc rim mages in Early Drills Michigan's freshman football team, under the watchful eye of their colorful coach, Wally Weber, finished their first week of prac- tice with a hard scrimmage at Ferry Field yesterday afternoon. With preliminary conditioning out of the way, Coach Weber be-' gan teaching his young proteges. some of the basic Michigan plays. Offensive and defensive teams were selected and they got their first taste of the famed Wolverine single wing. The blue-shirted offensive teaml had rough going for a while, but they improved rapidly and began ripping off long gains against a smaller, but game, defensive team. Tribe Bows to Tigers, 4-3 As Yanks Down Bosox, 9-6 NEW YORK - (P)-The New York Yankees knotted the Amer- ican League race in a triple-tie yesterdayvby defeating Boston, 9- 6, to move up even with the Red Sox and Cleveland Indians in the drive toward the pennant. Each team has seven games to play. DETROIT - (P) - The Detroit Tigers, continuing in their role of spoilers, threw the wide-open American League pennant scram- ble into a turmoil yesterday when they hung a 4-3 defeat on the Cleveland Indians in the first of a three-game series. Cleveland's set-back, together with the Yankees' 9-6 triumph over the Boston Red Sox.in New York, put the three contenders into a flat-footed deadlock. Each team now has won 91 gaames and lost 56 with seven games left to play. The Tiger victory, which snapped Cleveland's seven-game winning streak, simply supported their claim as the "bad men" of the circuit. Only last Sunday the Bengals threw a body block at Boston's pennant aspirations by sweeping a twin bill from the Red Sox. Just before that, the Tigers split a four-game series with the Yankees to prevent the New Yorkers from taking over the League lead. : e e- CHICAGO - (P)-Behind the five hit hurling of their crafty lefthander, Harry Brecheen, the St. Louis Cardinals kept their faint flag hopes alive by whipping the Chicago Cubs 4 to 1 here today. It was Bre- cheen's 19th victory as against seven defeats. ST. LOUIS-(P)--The Chicago White Sox shaded the St. Louis Browns 4-3 tonight behind the ef- fective five-hit pitching of Al Gettel. The White Sox collected eight hits .off Ned Garver and one off Bryan Stephens. * * * PITTSBURGH-(I)-The Cin- cinnati Reds put a crimp into the Pittsburgh Pirates' hopes for sec- ond place in the National League tonight as they survived a seventh-inning rally to nip the Bucs 4 to 3 before a chilled crowd of 18,914.
