THE M ICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, DECEMBEER 10, 1948 I I _ ______ I. y _ . CTING IN MINIATURE: Speech Students' Show To Be Teleeast By JIlM BROWN Swinging into the last few days of rehearsals for their first tele- Vision show of the year, "Demen- tia Wilcox," students in the Speech Department's Radio Divi- sion are finding their biggest ob- acle the necessity of acting in miniature. Actors who have been rehears- ing the show, which will be pro- duced in cooperation with Station WWJ-TV at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, have found it essential to restrain M ICHIGAN HELD OVER! LL TAKE THE WHOLE WORLD...AND YOU TO HIS HEART! , ; , all of their .movements because everything projected on the tele- vision screen is enlarged and nor- mal gestures seem distorted. ANOTHER problem faced by video actors is the necessity of learning their lines so well that they can not only concentrate on their acting, but also constantly follow the directions of the floor manager who controls the cam- era position of the actors with the assistahce of the director. In addition, television actors must train their voices to carry to the microphone placed above the set and still not have the appearance of shouting. Discussing the many problems involved in the production of a video show, Prof. Garnet Garri- son of the SpeechaDepartment Continuous from 1 P.M. ---NOW -- said, "Television employs a com- bination of the techniques of act- ing and radio, but in the merging it develops a technique of its own.' GARRISON is producing the show in cooperation with Tom Riley, senior television director of WWJ-TV. Written by James Schiavone, Grad., "Dementia Wilcox" is a farce concerning a Hollywood movie studio publicity depart- ment and its effortsto promote a young movie actress. Assisting Prof. Garrison in the direction is John Rich, Grad. FEATURED in the cast are James Lynch, '49Grad., Thomas E. Walsh, '49, Charles Fossatti, '49, Marilyn Scheel, '49, Audrey Axel- rod, '50, and Ruth Frankenstein, '49. The cast will also include Mer- rill McClatchey, Grad., Margaret Pell, '50, James Reese, '50, Pollee Thompson, '49, Donald Ball, '50, and William Swisher, '50. Grid Guessers Win Prizes Winners in a football score guessing contest sponsored by a national tobacco company have been announced. First prize of a television set was won by Phi Gamma Delta. Delta Epsilon copped second prize of an automatic radio phonograph while third, a radio phonograph was won by Alpha Chi Omega. Winners in the contest were de- termined by the number of cigar- ette package wrappers the house sent in with their guesses of game scores. BORN FOR ADVENTURE! JOHN GURNEY ** * Star of Met Has Bass Role In ,Messiah John Gurney, Metropolitan Opera star will make his second local appearance singing the bass role in the "Messiah" at 8:30 p.m. tomorrow and 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Hill Auditorium. Local concert-goers will remem- ber Gurney for his outstanding performance at the May Festival two years ago.
