Soph Cabaret Seeks Floorsh Tryouts for Annual Program W~UU U ~ Wf >- ,W '' .: .% * -,- 1UE IC IHIGAN DAILYX PACK, rtn",7 ow Ont else JI 4' Soph Cabaret, the extravan- ganza' presented each year by sophomore women, will get under way with floorshow tryouts next week. Soph Cab which will be present- ed this year December 10 and 11 first became an annual project for sophomore women in 1927. Two years later, the name Soph Cab- aret was adopted. In the begin- ning, it always represented a cir- cus theme, such as the "Bungling Brothers Circus" in 1937. Later the themes became different every year. Past years have produced "Brass Rail" with a gay nineties motif and Monte Carlo, which was the last Cabaret until 1944, because of the war. That year a music box theme was used; since then fairy tales and a Bohemian setting in. New York's Greenwich Village have served as central ideas. The theme for the Cabaret this December is being kept secret at present. Although the floorshow tryouts are being held first, this is only one small part of Soph "Cab." In ad- dition, there is a dance in the League Ballroom, a mixer, card games and booths selling favors and refreshments. Women inter- ested in working on committees will be called together at a mass meeting in October. The success of Soph Cabaret! depends on the support of every eligible sophomore woman. In the floorshow, there are many oppor- tunities open for would-be ac- tresses, dancers, and singers. The members of the Central Committee feel that this can be the best Soph Cabaret ever pro- duced, but only if everyone par- ticipates. The Michigan Union will re- sume their regular weekly dances from 9 p.m. to midnight today and tomorrow in the Un- ion Ballroom. Frank Tinker and the traditional Union Band will provide music for dancing. By MARJE SChiMIDT As beach parties, golf games, extended holidays, seasonal jobs, and yes-even summer school fade into the background, students are once again looking forward to house parties, dances, football games, gab sessions, and perhaps-studies. This week-end record dances come to the foreground as enter- tainment for those unlucky ones who are unable to attend our first big "grid" affair. The Phi Sig's will do their dancing Friday night from 9:00 p.m. to midnight amid a flourish of colors-primarily maize and blue, with State's colors running a far-away second. Theta Xi members have also planned a record dance - their's to be held Saturday from 9:00 p.m. to midnight in the quiet of their fraternity house. (And it may well be quiet since many of them will be attending an alumni meeting at Purdue.) But just to prove that this record dance idea is not completely contagious the medical men of Phi Rho Sigma are going to an- other extreme. Their party will be along a French casino theme, and is to be held Saturday from 9:00 p.m. to midnight. International intrigue and a world of mysticism will envelop all who enter the doors of Phi Rho Saturday. The 'boys have gone to a great deal of trouble to make this affair as authentic as possible; in fact, two men who toured Europe this summer went to many such places so that every detail could be remembered and brought back for this occasion. Oh, yes! We do have another record dance. The members of Beta Theta Pi have one planned for Saturday evening from 9:00 p.m. to midnight. They say that it is not the official opening of their social season but rather a little booster until they get started. Williams House has planned a listening party Saturday from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. and the girls from Mosher have been invited to share the excitement guaranteed to be brought forth by our opening football game. The Phi Chi's plan to add a little variation to their record dance, which will be held Saturday from 9:00 p.m. to midnight, by giving it a title-'Autum Leaves.' Knowing that, the guests may not be surprised if a guest of above mentioned leaves swirl down to greet them upon entering the house. The women will be pre- sented with autumn leaf corsages. Appropriate refreshments-apples, popcorn, fudge, cider, coffee and doughnuts-will be served in abundance throughout the evening. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hulett of Ann Arbor are among those who have been invited to chaperone. w W vU Store Hours: 9:30 .AKM. till 5:30 PAL " el J 0coLOflo; .: i _: Imported PURE SILK Sheers 'New' Campus Casbah Will Open Today The "new look," a new face and a new band will confront dance- goers at the re-opening of the Campus Casbah from 9 to 12 p.m. today and tomorrow in the Michi- gan League Ballroom. To that ravishing coed with the newest of "new looks" will go a coveted award, as yet unrevealed by the Casbah committee. From the dance floor six impartial male judges will select a number of women who are wearing the abso- lute "latest" in fall fashion. The new band will be headed by that popular melody man, Art Starr. Starr and his "quility" boys have captured the campus heart with their smooth danceable rhythm.
