STNA NVEMER 21,- 1348 THE MTCHICAN :DAILY 00 .... ...... League Drives Chairman Runs $8,000 Candy Booth Business SLIPPERY SLIPSTICK: Elusive Slide Rule Spirited Away Again EDITOR'S NOTE: This article is one of a series of informative sketches of positions on the League Under- graduate Council which will appeal daily on the Woman's Page. By MARY ANN HARRIS Her business includes every- thing from candybars to bobby pins. LeagueCouncil Drives chairman Anne Schoonmaker, whose chief job is supervision of the dorm candy booths, runs an $8,000 gross businiess whose sales include soup, fruit juices, razor owaua, -, ;leenex, pins, potato chips, apples, bobby pins, candy bars and nuts. Under her control are the seven orm candy booths and their -esident managers. These booths re run by the managers who order he supplies and take care of the iecessary clerks. G * IT IS HER job to handle the ooks, check with the manager, ho keep track of all the "two bit" items sold in their stores. Accur- ,cy is all important in her po- .a sition as general manager of this business. The "drives" duties constitute the other half of her position. Organization is what counts in this respect. Seeing that every charity post is covered every hour by a volun- teer is her job. THE DRIVE days are preceded by an organization of volunteers through the residence halls--and if someone misses his post, the Drives chairman takes care of it. The Drives chairman, who is responsible for three all-campus drives, does not, however, carry on alone. She is assisted by the Student Legislature drives com- mittee. Junior Dues Drive Ends Tomorrow Deadline for the collection of junior class dues is tomorrow. All those juniors who have not paid their dues may do so from 5 to 6 p.m. in the lobby of the League. Transfers who are jun- iors, and second semester sopho- mores who will be juniors next semester are included in the dues drive. The money collected as junior dues enables the junior class women to produce their annual project, the Junior Girl's Play. Proceeds from the play are do- nated to the University Fresh Air Camp. Virginia Campbell, general chairman of JGP, reports, "We hope to have 100 per cent cooper- ation in the drive for dues. These funds are necessary for the pro- duction JGP." Michigan Dames Michigan Dames have scheduled a meeting of their Child Study Group for 8 p.m. tomorrow at the home of Mrs. Helen Ulmer, 1547 Washtenaw. After the film "Life with Baby" has been shown, Miss Ruth Car- ney of the University Institute of Nursing will lead a group discus- sion. Members desiring transpor- tation may call Mrs. Gilkenson, 2-2046. 'Hey, buddy! Got a slide rule?" The Slide Rule Ball Coimittee is attempting once again to lo- cate its famous 8-foot slide rule, which was stolen again last night. The rule has been used tradi- tionally to decorate the annual Slide Rule Lall, but this Dec. 3, the tradition may be broken. EACH YEAR the lawyers and assorted fraternities make 'an at- tempt to capture this coveted prize. Despite electronic devices set up by the engineers, some in- genious devil (s) has succeeded in stealing the slide rule this year. This slide rule was last pub- licly displayed at the Indiana game last Saturday, but soon after was missed. It was found later under a pile of habeas corpi in the Law Quad parking lot, with not a fudge factor miss- ing. Then and there the Slide Rule Ball Committee gave it to the Michigan Technic for safekeeping. * * * LAST NIGHT the ultimate- in infamy was accomplished; a lone- ly reciprocal scale lying on the floor of the Technic office gave mute testimony to the theft. The loss was reported to The Daily rather than to the police with the hope that someone would return it. A special detector is being constructed now and the committee is confident that the slip-stick will sway majestically at the coming Slide Rule Ball on Dec. 3. The children on the Christmas list will be delighted with a small- sized storybook plate, which is made of glass with clamps for cardboard nursery-rhyme pictures to fit into the bottom of the plate. r/' DAY OF THANKS-With the onslaught of midsemesters almost at an end, and Thanksgiving just around the corner, this unidentified young man has evidently decided it's time to celebrate.
