THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE Thoinason Wins Fall Track Title Track men donit usually think of food when they are running. But it was a different story yes- terday as the first ten varsity and freshman distance men to cover a one and two-thirds mile cross c'ountry course were awarded the right to attend a, turkey dinner in their honor. Footing the bill Monday night at the Union will be local track en- thusiast Phil Diamoud. The feast will honor Bob Thomason, Justin Williams, Garth Kirkendall, Shel Capp, Bruce Vreelhnd, Ted Bird- sall, Don McEwen, Aaron Gordon, Ron Packer and Don. Cooper. These ten men were the first to cross that finish line in Wednes- day's season clincher on the Uni- versity Golf course. As Thomason set a new record of 7:32.8 for the distance, the runners concluded two and a half month's work on the hill and dale course. §lrorn de GUANTSTAN By MURRAY GRANT ... Daily Sports Editor As we go into our last week of prognosticating, our own private shaky limb is on its last legs, but there is one consolation-Navy doesn't play this week. Our average dropped a few points last week as we called six out of nine on the nose, including the upset win Ohio State scored over Illinois. We've picked 54 right out of 75 for a season's record of .720, with ten more coming up now. MICHIGAN-OHIO STATE-Michigan is loaded with buckshot for the Buckeyes and they plan to use every bit of their ammunition tomorrow. They have that first place rating to hold and Notre Dame will rave two more games after Michigan has completed its season. The town of Columbus is going wild right now, but after our Wol- verines make mince meat of the Buckeyes the town will look like a western ghost town. Michigan to. pour it on, over and around the Buckeyes. e * e ILLINOIS-NORTHWESTERN-This is another top scrap of the day. The question is, "Have the Wildcats saved enough after their great battle with a certain South Bend team?" Our guess is that the Rose Bowl is on their finger-tips and Illinois isn't going to stand in their way. Northwestern, by a substantial margin. PURDUE-INDIANA-Ths game will decide only one thing- which team will retain the traditional Old Oaken Bucket. Both Purdue and Indiana are working toward dismal seasons. A win in this traditional brawl will add some prestige, but not much else. Not much to choose from, but we'll stick with Purdue since they are 14 points better than Indiana by comparative scores with Michigan. MINNESOTA-WISCONSIN-This will add injuries to insult as the Gophers make their last vain attempt to get to Pasadena. The Badgers will also make a vain attempt, but they haven't got enough to win. I'll bet Harry Stuhldreher is thankful the season ends with this one. Now all he has to worry about is whether or not he'll have a job next year. Minnesota in a breeze. 10WA-BOSTON UNIVERSITY- The Terries from Boston are trying to get into the big time, but they're also biting off more than they can chew.. Iowa isn't the greatest team in the Big Nine, but they have more than enough to tame the Terriers. SMU-BAYLOR-The Mustangs are headed for the Cotton Bowl, but Baylor has upset in their eyes. Maybe it's only some southwestern dust as Doak Walker et al have more than. Baylor can take. SMU continues down victory trail. *. * * * DARTMOUTH-PRINCETON-This should be the game of the day in the East. Both teams have good ground attacks, but the Tigers, are weak on pass defense, while the Indians also possess a strong aerial attack. On that basis we'll pick Dartmouth. HARVARD-YALE-The "do-or-die" struggle that is as old as foot- ball comes up for another test tomorrow. Neither team has put together a great season, but winning this one always makes a bad season look lots better. We'll take Yale in an upset. NORTH CAROLINA-DUKE-Another Bowl-bound team takes on a traditional foe. The Tarheels have Justice and that should be enough. Choo-Choo Charley seems to have been given the title of the best back in the country, and North Carolina's record bares out that premise. The Tarheels should twist the Blue Devil's tail. PENN STATE-PITT-The Panthers have been winning with a strange consistency, but the Nittany Lions are one of the nation's best. Pitt would like to add this one to their string, but their desires can't overcome the strength Penn State has. -Penn State should take this one for their second straight undefeated season. igh tweightsFace OS U Today By MERLE LEVIN (Special to The Daily) COLUMBUS--The vanguard of Michigan's football warriors ar- rives in this football-whacky city today to do battle with the Scarlet and Gray-clad Buckeyes of Ohio State.
