PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1948 I w ill III FROM OLD TO NEW: 'U' Museum Exhibit American, Peruvian Art DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETIN Modern American and pre-Span- ish Peruvian art will be the two exhibits at the University Museum of Art next month, Curator Helen Hall has announced. "Americana," consisting of paintings, carvings, ceramics and Tobin Reports Wage Raises Not Uniform CINCINNATI-() )-Earnings of some 16,000,000 workers are nine per cent behind the "third round" of post-war wage increases already received by big, mass industry em- ployes, Secretary of Labor Tobin said. Answering a news conference question as to whether a fourth round of increases is inevitable, Tobin answered that in certain fields "workers haven't received a third round yet." * * * PRESIDENTIAL Assistant John R. Steelman said "enemies of de- mocracy" are trying to grab con- trol of labor unions to gain van- tage points for attacking demo- cratic government. Steelman, in an address to the American Federation of La- bor's 67th convention, said, "Communists look upon labor organizations as rich fields for infiltration into community life." textiles, will be shown from Nov. 28 through Dec. 27. * * * "ANCIENT Peruvian Textiles," ranging from the fourth to the early sixteenth century, will be on display Dec. 5-28. The 50 original watercolor de- signs in the "Americana" ex- hibit were done as a WPA praj- ect for unemployed artists dur- ing the depression. They are from the Index of American De- sign in the National Gallery of Art. The designs are executed to scale in a special watercolor technique which renders them almost tan- gible. * * * THE FOLLOWING groups of popular arts are also included in the American art exhibit: circus carvings and weathervanes, toys, woodcarving, painting, ceramics and toleware, textiles and chalk- ware. Paintings and woodcarvings from the Spanish Southwest are also included. The display of Peruvian tex- tiles will number 50 pieces selected from more than 400 fabrics in the Textile Museum's collection in Washington, D. C. The pieces were selected by Alfred Kidder II and M. D. C. Crawford, noted authori- ties in the field of pre-Columbian art and archaeology. "THE TEXTILES are particu- larly fine as far as technical vir- tuosity, perfection of design and color, and preservation are con- cerned," Miss Hall commented.
