Misses Mark
As Team Wins
NASHVILLE, TENN.-Vander-
bilt breezed to a 56-0 football vic-
tory over Marshall College today,
but Vanderbilt fans were disap-
pointed.
The season-Lee Nalley, Com-
modore punt-return star, missed
setting a new all-time collegiate
record for run-backs by only ten
yards.
Nalley carried five punts back
771 yards. That would have been
enough and to spare if figures re-
leased last week b ythe National'
Collegiate Athletic Bureau had
been correct, but they were not.
The 165 pound halfback was
credited with carrying 31 punts
back 557 yards so that he needed
only 60 yards mire to top the 616
yard record set by Bill Geyer of
Colgate in 1941. A recheck showed
Nalley had been credited with two
punt returns by Daryle May, mak-
ing his total 530 yards in 29 car-
ries.

tween Michigan and an undefeated season, yesterday plastered its
worst defeat on favored Illinois, 34-7, and kept the Buckeyes' faint
Rose Bowl hopes alive.
The super-charged Buckeyes, who close their Big Nine campaign
against Michigan next Saturday, pulverized the Illini with grinding
land power and opportune passing.
AN ILLINI HOMECOMING throng of 65,732 saw the Bucks
methodically fashion a 13-7 lead through three quarters and then
explode for three last period touchdowns.
The same Illinois team which held Army to a 26-21 victory
never had a chance against the shattering plunges of fullback
Joe Whisler and the rabbit-speed of other Buckeye backs.
The win gave Ohio State a 3-2 conference record with only Michi-
gan remaining to play. Northwestern, with a 4-1 record, closes against
Illinois. An Ohio State upset of Michigan might well plump the
Bucks into the Rose Bowl.
THE BUCKS STRUCK for a 13-0 three-quarters lead on Pandel
Savic's 10-yard payoff pass to Jerry Krall in the first period and
Krall's 10-yard end sweep early in the third period.
Illinois showed its teeth for the first and only time in the
third period when Bernie Krueger hit end Walt Kersulis on a 17-
yard touchdown pass, trimming Ohio's lead to 13-7.
But the determined Buckeyes, growing stronger all the way, made
three last period touchdowns.
Minnesota 28, Iowa 21
IOWA CITY. Ia.-Massive Minnesota bruised its way to a 28-21
victory over Iowa yesterday in a sizzling flurry of touchdowns.
The underdog Hawks gave their husky Big Nine rivals a terrific
battle for three quarters but in the end it was Minnesota's power that
paid off.
Iowa, unshaken by two costly early fumbles deep in Gopher ter-
ritory, fought back three times to tie the score. The Iowa enthusiasts
in the crowd of 42,000 nursed hopes for an upset similar to the Hawks'.
13-7 win in 1947.
IT DIDN'T COME. Minnesota recovered a fourth quarter Iowa
fumble on the Gophers' 18 and they took off on the drive that brought
them their fourth conference victory and kept alive faint Rose Bowl
dreams.
Minnesota drove and passed to three touchdowns. They came
on marches of 62, 47 and 61 yards. Little Billy Bye did the scoring
on short spurts each time. Gordon Soltan added the extra points.
Iowa, afire with determination, matched those first three touch-
downs. But the tired Hawks couldn't halt the last Gopher splurge,
and they were unable to match the clinching Minnesota touchdown in
the last quarter.

Michigan State 48, Iowa State 7
AMES, Ia.-It was too much and too long for the Iowa State Cy-
clones yesterday as a powerful Michigan State team rolled to a 48-7
victory over the Iowans.
The Spartans counted their first touchdown with nine plays in
five minutes of the opening quarter, scored another seven minutes
later and added two more in the second quarter.
In the second half it was nearly the same story with one in
the third and two more in the final period.
An estimated 8,000 Cyclone rooters had little to cheer about. The
lone Cyclone touchdown came early in the third period.
Outside of that the Iowans threatened only twice, once in the
second period when they got to the 11 and again in the third when
they recovered a kick on the 15.
Wisconsin 26, Marquette 0
MADISON, Wis-The University of Wisconsin punched over four
touchdowns against a weak Marquette University squad yesterday to
defeat the Hilltoppers, 26-0.
A crowd of 43,000 saw the Badgers take their 20th victory in
the 24-game intrastate series, and their second triumph against
six defeats this season.
After an exchange of punts in the first quarter, Wisconsin's Wally
Dreyer squirmed loose around left end and went 60 yards for the first
touchdown.
In the third quarter, quarterback Lisle Blackbourn, Jr., scampered
around left end for a touchdown from the seven, capping a march
highlighted by Dreyer's 43-yard breakaway. Blackbourn also added
the extra point with a placekick.

Sophomore Don Dufek went

As always Walt Tenninga's kicks
were long and accurate, averaging
33.8 yards per try. Particularly
outstanding was a. 50 yard boot
that twisted out of bounds on the
Indiana one yard line.
Charlie Ortmann's passing was
exceptionallyproficient, complet-
ing eight cut of 15 aerials for a
total of 123 yards.
