PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN IAA i i.Y PRMAV- VMM 9e> IOAQ a s:.a. .c _a______a________aa, a_, t6 French Situation Still Uncertain In Spite of DeGaulle Victory The victory of Charles de Gaulle's anti-communist forces in Monday's election of the upper chamber still leaves the French political situation undecided, ac- cording to two University faculty members. Pointing out that de Gaulle's "Reunion of the French, People" party in reality won only 40% of the second Chamber, Dr. Manfred C. Vernon said. "It is still doubt- ful on the basis of this election that he will come to power." VERNON EXPRESSED doubt whether de Gaulle would be able to force a national eelection im- mediately, but added, "I don't think he will initiate a revola- tion." Although he stressed the fact that the second Chamber in real- ity wields very little power, Prof. Preston W. Slosson of the History Department said, "The election indicates two things the decline of communism in France and the increased pop- ularity of de Gaulle's party." Michigan Art Exhibit Ends ShowinHere "Michigan on Canvas," a collec- tion of 100 paintings depicting life in this state, ended its Ann Arbor showing yesterday. Some 15,000 people, a large per- centage of whom were 'U' stu- dents, saw the exhibition and cast votes for their favorite painting. Heading the list of favorites was Ogden Pleissner's "Fishing on the Au Sable" which was followed by another of Mr. Pleissner's paint- ings "Rainbow Club." Also high in the estimation of Ann Arbor audiences were Zoltan Sepeshy's "Lighthouse on Lake Michigan," "U. S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw" by Carlos Lopez, University Professor of Drawing and Painting and an- other of Mr. Pleissner's works "Ore Boats at the Sault Ste. Marie." The other artists whose works are represented in this collection are Doris Lee, Arnold Blanch, David Fredenthal, Aaron Bohrod, Alfred Dehn, Joe Jones, and John DeMartelly, Cat You Top This? Solution: High-strength wire whose use allows the span between poles to be in- creased from 150 feet to more than 300. One pole now does the work of two. The problem, of course, is a continuing one for telephone people. High-strength wire with required electrical qualities is only one of many things they have developed to help solve the problem in these days of high con- struction costs. 1 r - Siritzky loin-inot)onul keir we 'C, Tp Susan ~HAYWARD Van HEFLIN IN ' with Boris XARL OFF "Pluto's JI RENTALS AVAILABLE FOR a AN so Am 4ft .oi.
