PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1949 t6" ." .. ., *T'HE GOOD OLD DAYS: University Historical Exhibit Features Catalogues, Papers . Students who are curious as to what the campus and town looked like in more serene days can find out by viewing the exhibit in the office of the Michigan Historical Collections, located in Rm. 160, Rackham Building. Among varied items on display are drawings of the 'U' dating back as far as 1870, when staid old University Hall resembled a miniature Eiffel tower and little in the way of a township existed * * * OTHER ITEMS of interest in the exhibit include two 'U' cat- alogues for the years of 1843 and 1845, at which time the combined total of students and iaculty num- bered a whopping 59, tidbits from the paper of John Judson Bagley, governor of Michigan from 1873 to 1877. The original copy of "L'ame Penitente" (The Penitent Soul), listed as the first book among known Michigan imprints is also on display. The exhibit is entitled "A Dec- ade of Collecting Endeavor" inas- much as the Michigan Historical Collections was established in 1938 for the purpose of gathering docu- ments that would throw light on the history of the State, as well. as the University. Dr. Meader was largely respon- sible for the founding of the De- troit Society for General Seman- tics, sponsorers of the dinner. Mc- Laurin, 54, a retired Negro professor, became the first member of his race ever to enroll in the all-white University of Oklahoma. McLaurin, (left) is shown conferring with J. E. Fellows, dean of admissions at the university (right). McLaurin's admission to the university's graduate school to complete work on a doctor's degree followed a protracted legal fight. By DON McNEIL Hi! How many times have total or semi-total strangers passed you on campus with this greeting? A Daily reporter tried the ex- periment this past week to see if the 21,000 enrollment had done anything to the friendly nature of students. * * * REACTIONS to the salutation were varied, from complete sur- prise through doubtful acknowl- edgement to warm response. The usual reaction however was to respond by saying "Hello." When questioned on her re- sponse, one coed said that she al- ways answered, on the assump- tion that it was someone she knew while some said they an- swered because it was good to hear a friendly voice among the welter of, students. North Texas State University, in an area of traditional friend- liness, was perturbed at the lack of congeniality among its swollen enrollment and crowded living conditions. The Student Senate and Women's forum sponsored "Howdy Week" to see if the students couldn't be made to warm up towards each other. As the student newspaper, The Campus Chat, reported it, "With grins on faces and posters on trees, the week began with a cau- tious enthusiasm." - * * * THE PRESIDENT of the Wom- en's forum and the president of the Student Senate were awak- ened in the early hours of the morning by "I just called up to say "howdy," so 'Howdy.'
