I gT"AY9, OCTOBER 10, 1949 THE MICHIGAN DAILY __E CTTA AT. SNAOCOF 1,14 i SPIRITUALS: Concert Series To Open With Marian Anderson Initiating this Year's Extra Concert Series will be contralto Marion Anderson, who will make the first appearance in her 14th national tour Thursday evening in Hill Auditorium. Named as "radio's foremost woman singer" for five consecutive years, Miss Anderson has become an institution in America's concert circles. Since her Town Hall debut in 1935, the noted soprano has given 715 concerts in her heavily-attended tours. INCLUDED IN THURSDAY'S varied program will be four spir- ituals for which she is particularly popular. Similar religious songs furnished the basis of Miss Anderson's career, which began in 1925 with a Philadelphia church choir. Aided by several scholarships, the soprano studied voice while touring Europe until 1935, when Sol Hurok heard her singing in Paris and immediately signed her for an American tour, thus raising her to the national stardom which she now enjoys. Single tickets for Miss Anderson's concert may be purchased in. the Choral Union offices in Burton Memorial Tower, and at Hill Auditorium box office Thursday night.
