TIE MICIGAN DAI I FRIDAY, MAY 28. i ._..._...._.__.........__ m___... ® , jk EKN Faculty Rating Sheets To Be Shown Faculty rating sheets, drawn up by Eta Kappa Nu, honorary engi- neering faculty, are being filled in by electrical engineering students for the first time this semester. Don Sagaser, retiring president of Eta Kappa Nu, said the sheets will be tabulated and distributed to instructors and the head of the electricaihengineering department. Items included on the evalua- tion sheets are: effectiveness of the textbook used, value of the course, instructor's ability to get his material across, his knowledge of the subject, attitude toward students, logical presentation of the subject, interest and enthus- iasm of the instructor, ability to make material interesting, and the amount of time spent in prepara- tion of assignments. OPINION POLL: Survey Obtains Accurate Samplings U' Scholarships Announced (EDITOW'S NOTE: The following is an interpretative article on tle tech- niques and purposes of the Bureau of Student Opinion, whose extensive survey on campus issues has appear- ed in The Daily this week.) By MARY STEIN' In its survey, the Bureau of Student Opinion had three objec- tives. First, it sought to demonstrate that conducting statistically re- liable and valid surveys of Univer- sity student opinion was practical. Determined Attitude Second, it sought to determine student attitudes and levels of in- formation on specific issues sub-: mitted for study by organizations: like The Daily, the Union, and the1 League, who wanted information to aid them in forming plans and+ policies. Third, the survey provided stu- dents of Study Design in Survey Research a laboratory in which methods of survey work could be tested in actual practice. By Volunteer Groups Students to be polled were se- lected by modern random sam- pling procedures. It was5deter- mined that a sample of 500 stu- dents would be more than satis- factory for obtaining valid re- sults. In other words, one student out of 35 at the University would be interviewed. This 1,'35 ratio would theoretically yield a sample of 563. providing an even greater "margin of safety." Every 35th Student After the size of the student ple size was exceeded, it was de- cided to work with the sample af- ter every care was taken that no minority group was excluded. This method proved singularly successful in obtaining an accu- rate. representative sample of the campus population. Comparisons made between the proportion of veterans to non-veterans and be- tween the proportion of men to women in the entire University population and in the fractional survey group revealed close agree- ment.
