Gross Upholds
Menu Freedom
Tired of Cabbage,
Wants Asparagtus
WASHINGTON, May l--(UP)-
Rep. Gross (Rep., Pa.) is riad at
the Agriculture Department. He
says it's trying to tell Pennsyl-
vania Dutch what to eat.
It seems the department has got
out some sample menus to show
how cheaper foods often may be
substituted for scarce ones.
Save for one particular, that's
all right with Gross.
"They say, 'eat cabbage instead
of asparagus'," he said. "Well, we
eat cabbage the year around. This
is the time of year when a fellow
needs a little asparagus."
But it's geographically, not gas-
tronomically, that he thinksrthe
agriculture people are in error.
"They decided to start in Lan-
caster and York counties in Penn-
sylvania," he said, in horror.
"Why, we're Pennsylvania
Dutch up there. Every housewife
has enough food canned to run
her four, maybe five years."
Incidentally, the guy or gal who
got up these menus for the De-
partment of Agriculture certainly
knows how to walk that straight,
narrow line.
The menus came out in the mid-
dle of a Congressional argument
over which is better, butter or
oleo? The recipes avoid a fight--
by never mentioning either.
