By JO ANNE MISNER A Phi Beta Kappa key isn't the only key to success in department: store work. Although department stores don't "snoot learning," appear- ance and attitude are equally important in getting jobs in this field, according to Calvin J. Hall of the University Bureau of Appointments. A personnel agent for one of the largest department stores in the' country told Hall recently that he gave special consideration to the interviewee's posture and appear- ance when she entered his office when determining whether or not he would hire her. Coeds who appear for inter- views in collegiate clothes are under a definite handicap, Hall said. Since the atmosphere of a department store is essentially more "sophisticated," personnel representatives often find it WAA Tennis Tournament To Begin ATTRACTIVE HOUSECOAT --Summer housecoat is shown above as pictured in the April issue of Junior Bazaar. It is pale pink dotted swiss (the dots are white) with a small collar of eyelet cotton, string- tied in black, and with a volu- minous dirndl skirt that flows away in soft folds from the narrow buckled belt. The WAA Tennis Club tourna- ments will be scheduled for play this week. Entrants in the all camous wo- men's doubles, the closed mixed doubles and the closed singles must consult the tournament schedules, which will be posted on the W.A.B. and Barbour Gym Bulletin boards, and consult oppo- nents to arrange first round matches, which must be played before Friday. All club members are listed in the singles tourney, Ballet Club-Members will meet at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Dance Studio of Barbour Gym for practice for the dance program. It is important that all member's be present, according to Barbara Forster, club manager. E Cue To Have Four Bands The second annual E Cue Ball at the "Hotel Waldorf-Stevens" will be presented by East Quad from 9 p.m. to midnight Saturday, May 8. Each dining room and lounge will carry out a different theme and there will be four bands to provide music for dancing. Department stores don't think that success necessarily stems from a C-studded grade card, but most colleges offer little in the way of technical training for jobs in this field. Consequently, employes gen- erally start out on a fairly equal basis in positions such as mer- chandising, purchasing, general management and sales. Representatives are naturally more interested in a coed who shows interest herself about her future work, Hall stated. A stu- dent who asks questions about opportunities for advancement, living conditions and company policies is much more likely to get the job than one who "just doesn't care." Representatives from two de- partment stores will be at the Bureau of Appointments this week to interview both men and women for positions in merchandising and managing. A representative from Winkleman's Stores in De- troit will be at the Bureau Tues- day. Wieboldt Department Stores in Chicago will have a represen- tative at the Bureau Thursday and Friday. Students should call Extension 371 for appointments. Song Leaders Song leaders for Lantern Night will meet at 5:10 p.m. Tuesday in the WAB. Leaders will present the names of the songs at this time and draw for position on the program. Anyone unable to come may send a representa- tive or call Patt Newberg at 2-3225.
