MicbiTan State Defeats Wolverie Netters, 6-3 (Special to The Daily) LANSING, Mich., April 28 - Michigan's 1948 tennis team went down to a 6-3 defeat at the hands of Michigan State this afternoon on the cement courts of Jenison Field. Winning only two singles and one doubles match the Wolverines made a battle of it all the way, forcing three Spartans to the limit before going down to the home- court favorites. Andy Paton, playing number one scored a 3-6, 6-2-6-3 victory over the Spartan ace Al Reyn- olds. But Fred Otto, perform- ing on the unfamiliar cem'ant courts was defeated by John Shingleton in straight sets, MICHIGRAS COMMITTEE CENTRAL MEMBER 6-2, 6-2, evening up the match. Bill Mikulich then shot Michi- gan into a short-lived lead with a '7-5, 6-2 win over Bob Malaga, but Bob Chuck evened up the count as he edged Jack Hersh, 6-1, 6-2. Don Waldron and Ed Fleisch- man of Michigan State shot the Spartans into a commanding lead with victories in the num- bers five and six singles. Wal- dron defeated Gordon Naugle in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, while Fleischman edged by Dick Lincoln in another thriller by taking a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 triumph. Reynolds and Shingleton clinched the match for State with a clear-cut doubles victory over Michigan's Paton and Otto. The Spartan duo won in straight set scores of 6-1, 6-2. Chuck and Malaga added an in- surance victory with a 6-0, 6-8, 6-4 triumph over the Wolverine number two team of Mikulich and Hersh. A GIF T! Cowles, having just finished his second season here, said he had discussed the possibility with Gopher Athletic Director Frank McCormick yesterday. "Naturally," Cowles said, "Any- body will listen to an offer, but the chances are about nine to one against anything develop- ing." REDS TRIUMPH CINCINNATI, April 28-(AP)- Johnny Vander Meer held the Chicago Cubs to six hits while Cincinnati pounded starter Johnny Schmitz and two other pitchers for a dozen safeties to win, 8-1. The victory raised Cincinnati up to the .500 mark with five won and five lost. Linksters Lick Titans 2z-, 2 By MURRAY GRANT Playing consistent golf, the1 Michigan varsity linksters took the measure of the University of Detroit squad yesterday by a 21%/2- 51 margin as they racked up their second straight win of the regular campaign. Captain Ed Schalon and Pete Elliott teamed against Roy Ice- berg and Dick Buechler in the number one match as Schalon copped 2 of 3 points from Ice- berg and Elliott shooting a 79 took all 3 points from Buechler. The best ball play was split 1MA- In the second match Rog Kess- Varsity, Jayvee Golf Squads Victorious ler and Doug Beath made easy; work of the Detroiter duo of Bob DeVine and John Povlitz. Kessler took all 3 points from DeVine and Beath captured 2 from Povlitz. The Wolverines also captured all the best ball points. Chuck MacCallum and Tom Messinger teamed to make the third Wolverine entry as they faced Don Visscher and Dave Turner. MacCallum shooting good golf all the way took 3 points from Visscher and then Michigan suffered their onkyv loss as Turner edged by Mess- inger to give Detroit 2 points, The best ball play, awarding one point for each nine and an- other point for the entire match, also went to Michigan as Mac- Callum and Messinger added a final 3 points to the Wolverine total. PETE ELLIOTT Albion Beaten By B'Squad Bill Ludolph's jayvee golfers scored an easy 18-1 triumph over the Albion linksters at the Uni- versity Golf Course to notch their first victory of the season. Winning every one of the six matches and another point for the low stroke score the jayvees had a fairly easy time in racking up victory number one. John McCloy led the "B" squad with. a sizzling 79 for the 18 hole route while Keith LeClair, Bill Telfer and Harvey Jones posted scores in the very low 80's. Jerry Weiler and B3ob Keiser rounded out the Wolverine entry. All but Keiser scored shutout triumphs over their MIAA foes as the Albion golfers found the hills and bunkers of the Michigan course not exactly to their liking, The jayvees continue their heavy schedule with a home match against Michigan Normal tomorrow.
