Feature appointment was the naming of Dr. James K. Pollock, chairman of the political science department, as James Orin Mur- fin professor of Political Science, in recognition of his contributions to the faculty as well as in state, national and international af- fairs. The professorship was estab- lished in 1940 by a gift from John W. Anderson, a Detroit alumnus, in recognition of his lifelong friendship with James 0. Murf in, an alumnus and former regent of the University. Other appointments were Dr. Marshall Mason Knappen as pro- fessor of political science, Dr. Lawrence Hugh Aller as associate professor of astronomy, Dr. Mor- gan Thomas as assistant professor of political science, John William Leucht as assistant professor of aernonautical engineering and Dr. James Van Gundia Neel as assist- ant professor of internal medi- cine. The Regents promoted Dr. Frederick H. Test to an assistant professorship in zoology and re- appointed Professors Gail E. Densmore and Theodore M. New- comb to the executive committee of the Institute for Human Ad- justment. A total of $40,099 in gifts was accepted at the meeting. The largest amount4 bas a grant of $18,860 from the American Can- cer Society for the purpose of scientific research. Garden Class To Start Here "Gardening and the Care of Home Grounds," a new eight- week Extension Service non- credit course, will hold its first weekly session at 3 p.m. Thurs- day in Rm. 1020 Angell Hall. Mrs. Lenore Thompson Bing- ley, who has had wide experience in horticulture and landscape gar- dening, will teach the course. Topics to be discussed include early spring gardening, lawn care, f lowering shrubs. Enrollment may be made at th~t Extension Service offices in 10~7 Haven Hall or at the first class meeting.
