Groups Plan Opera Double Header Here The speech department and music school will collaborate in the presentation of a double bill of opera at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday next week in the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre, with a special matinee scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Operas to be presented are Henry Purcell's "Dido and Ae- neas" and "The Telephone" by Gian-Carlo Menotti. Great Living Composer While Purcell is recognized as one of the greatest 17th century English writers of opera, Menotti is, by contrast, one of the greatest living composers. The latter has been widely acclaimed for his modern musical motifs and ar- rangements. "The Telephone," which shared the bill with another Menotti opera last season on Broadway, has received almost unanimous critical acclaim. The opera was just recently released for amateur production, and Ann Arbor audi- ences will be among the first to see it as such. First True English Opera "Dido and Aeneas" was written in 1689 and is recognized as the ifrst true English opera. A by- product of the Restoration, it was written for production by pupils of Josias Priest's School for Girls in Chelsea, where singing, dancing and acting were an important part of the curriculum. Tickets for the double bill will be placed on sale in the Mendels- sohn box office Monday, with a special student rate prevailing for the Wednesday and Thursday per- formances.
