THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE Wage 'Ice Jug' Battle r 4 iIi 'M'---Cophers Resume Feud This Weekend Opening the battle for the mythical Western Conference championship and for the right to represent the Midwest in the NCAA championship playoffs, Michigan's hockey team faces off on Minneapolis ice tonight in the first of a two game series with the Golden Gophers of Minnesota. The NCAA Mid-Western repre- sentative will be chosen from among Michigan, Minnesota and Michigan Tech and'since Tech is the weakest of the trio, this week- end's games will go a long way toward deciding which team will fight it cut with the two Eastern and the far Western choices for the national championship. Records Favor 'M' On the basis of their records, Michigan is rated a slight favor- ite, having lost only one of their six contests to date, while the Gophers have won only five of their 12 games played. Two of their losses came at the hands of a powerful Manitoba Club team, both by narrow: margins. This showing, coupled with the traditional rivalry and the home ice advantage, should even things up to a considerable extent. Woiverine coach Vic Heyliger named a 14 man squad to make the lcng trek to Minnesota, in- cluding eight forwards, four de- fensemen, and two goalies. Line-ups Unchanged Michigan's first line will be composed, as usual, of Gordie Mc- Millan at center with Wally Gacek and Al Renfrew at the wings. As the second line, Heyliger will have Bill Jacobson, flanked by Ted Greer and Bob Marshall, with center Owen McArdle and Len Erumm as available spares. The four defensemen making the trip will be the starting duo of CapUIn Connie Hill and Ross Smith, as well as Herb Upton and Dick Starrak. Jack McDonald will be in his usual goaltending spot with Paul Milanowski as spare goalie. Two Lines for Minn. Minnesota mentor "Doc" Rom- nes indicated that the highest point men on the three lines used in the 12 previous Gopher contests would be blended into two new forward combinations which will carry the burden against Michi- gan. According to present plans, Romnes will us& only these two lines in the remaining tilts with Michigan, North Dakota and Michigan Tech. One combination will be composed of center Roland dePaul, who leads the Minnesota sextet in scoring with nine goals and six assists for a total of 15 points, Bob Fleming at left wing, and Bud Frick right wing. Lindegard Second in Scoring The other trio will have Jerry Lindegard, second man in the Gopher scoring race with six goals and six assists, at center, with Bob Harris and Bill Hodgins at the wings. Veteran left wing Jerry Remole, will work into either com- bination as needed. At defense, Coach Romnes has moved Jim Alley, heavy sopho- more right wing back to replace Howie Johnson as Dick Roberts defensive mate on the number one defending combine. Alley's expe- rience and speed are the reasons onight for this change. A second defense duo consists of Denis Bergman and Jack O'Brien. All Work 'N.
