TIIE MICHIG AN DAILY FRIDAY, JANUARY 1 ... 'M' Teams See Big Nine Gymnasts Face Gophers Here Tomorrow Ni oht Michigan fans will have a look at the first Maize and Blue gym- natics team since 1933, plus the prospective national champions, when the Wolverines meet the Golden Gophers tomorrow night at 8 p.m. in the large gymnasium at the" Intramural Building in the only varsity contest slated for Ann Arbor Saturday night. Minnesota will bring a group of brilliant performers to Ann Arbor. Gopher Coach Ralph Piper, who has turned out five Big Nine championship outfits in his 12 years of coaching, calls this the best team of his career. Gophers Rated Topsj Boasting such individual stars as Jim Peterson, Western Confer- ence all-around champion, the Gophers are top heavy favorites to outscore the newly formed Wol- verine squad. In addition to Pet- erson, spectators will see two other champions in action. Don Hed- strom will demonstrate how its done on the parallel bars, and Gopher teammate Howard Swan- son, also a Big Nine champ, will perform on the high bar. Coach Newt Loken doesn't quite know what to expect from his Wolverine acrobats. In spite of a 59-30 romp over Central Michigan in their only appearance to date, ON THE FRONT BURNER-Bob Cook, ace Badger forward, is ex- pected to give the Wolverine cagers plenty of trouble when the two teams collide Saturday at Madison. Cook led the Big Nine Conference in scoring last year for the first place Badgers. work together on double pivot plays on either side of the court, leaving the center space open for fast breaking Cook. The diminut've forward also is one of the best floor shots in the Big Nine today, ana accord- ing to Michigan coach Ozzie Cowles, "Youn can't give him two seconds uncovered. If you do, the ball is out of his hands spinning towards the basket." To counteract the height advan-I tage, Cowls intends $,o stick with' the same line-up that he used against Minnesota, Roberts at center and Don McIntosh, who has improved s4eadily, at forward. The task of guarding Cook will fall on the shoulders of Pete EEl- liott with Captain Bob Harrison and forward Mack Suprunowicz rounding out Michigan's starters. I WE'RE PRAYING FOR YOU! Schedule Vacation Meets For Tank, Track Team how the squad will look against big time opposition is a matter for speculation. 'M'Gymnasts No Loafers If hard work pays off, the Mich- igan performers, who have been practicing morning, noon and night for the past two weeks, should give the Michigan fans something to holler about. Five men will perform for the Maize and Blue, led by co-captains Glenn Neff and Tom Tillman. Dave Lake, Dick Fashbaugh, and Bob Willoughby round out the Wolverine squad. Tillman, Michigan's number one tumbler will have the unique as- signment of trying to outpoint his coach's brother. Herb Loken, Newt's kid brother, is hailed as the best tumbler on the star studded Gopher squad. Sport Grafs Dom Tomasi, diminative left guard whose key blocks made the Wolverine offense click was awarded a gold football last night in honor of his selection on the All-Catholic All-American foot- ball squad. SOUTH BEND, Ind., Jan. 15- (.LP) - All-America quarterback Johnny Lujack of Notre Dame de- scribed as "really terrific" hisse- lection today as 1947's male ath- lete-of-the-year in the Associated Press poll. "I can't believe this honor was given to a small-town boy from Pennsylvania," declared ther22- year-old gridiron wizard from Connellsville, Pa., who almost doubled the number of first-place votes accorded his closest rival, tennis star Jack Kramer, in the AP's 1947 year-end poll of sports writers. PRAGUE, Czechoslovakia, Jan. 15-(P)-Barbara Ann Scott, 18- year-old world figure skating champion from Ottawa, Canada, successfully defended her Euro- pean title here tonight. NEW YORK, Jan. 15 - (APl) - The National Footbal League re- ceived powerful reinforcements for its grudge battle against the All- America conference today when a syndicate of seven wealthy De- troiters purchased the Detroit Lions from Fred L. Mandel Jr., and announced it was prepared to pour $500,000 into the enterprise. All students possessing lock- ers in the Intramural Building are requested to either have themi renewed or emptied by Saturday. Action Matmen Meet Illinois Squad At Champaign This Saturday afternoon will find Coach Cliff Keen's wrestling squad, victorious in its initial meet of the season with Ohio Uni- versity, taking on all-powerful Illinois' defending Big-Nine cham- pions at Champaign. Even though the Wolverines gave an impressive showing in their first performance, smother- ing the Bobcats 30-0, Coach Keen realizes that his squad has a long way to go before it will be ready to meet the 1947 conference champs on equal terms. The first bout of the afternoon will pit Michigan's Byron Dean, or John Keller, against Illinois' Dean Ryan, at121 pounds. In the 128 pound division, Wol- verine Bob Johnson will match brawn and brain with Illini Kash- iroubles, 1947 National Champion, and Big-Nine Conference cham- pion for the past two years. Marlin's Foe Undecided A tryout between Jim Smith and the Wolverine sensation of the Ohio University meet, Ed Grimes, will determine the opposition to an as yet unannounced Illinois grap- pler in the 136 pound class. Illini Ken Marlin, who copped third place laurels in the N.C.A.A. meet last season, will grapple with either Phil Carlson or George Curtis in the 145 pound slot. The 155 pound bout will find the Wolverine's bid for top national honors, Captain Bob Betzig, tan- gling with Stan Lee of Illinois. Shapiro Returns The 165 pound national cham- pion, Dave Shapiro will probably meet Wolverine Marty Cranston, who will be making his first ap- pearance of the season. Wrestling for the Maize and Blue at 175 pounds will be either Wes Tebeau or Hugh Mack, op- posing an as yet unnamed Illi- nois grappler. "IT'S A DATE!"
