There once was a time, back in the dark ages of childhood, when thoughts of Christmas brought joy and excitement to all. But in Ann Arbor, 1947, some noticeable changes have occurred. About the time the rest of the population is concerned with Christmas shopping and how they'll manage to meet the bills after the first of the "happy" new year, the U. of M. student is drifting along in his usual procrastinating way. Suddenly, three professors announce blue- books for the last day before vacation. This comes as somewhat of a shock to the naive and uninitiat- ed, but the hardened upperclass- man has been expecting it all along, although he, too, is in many ways unprepared. Deciding that there are more pressing matters to be taken care of, Joe College forgets his bluebooks and starts out on a shopping tour. After spending hours fighting the crowds, he realizes his mistake and returns home with nothing but shat- tered nerves. Pushing his studies still far- ther back in his mind, our aver- age student is horrified to find that he has not yet made reserva- tions for home. After calling the train station, bus depot and air- port, comes the realization that he is only a few weeks too late. A problem has now developed which is of world-shaking im- portance. Either he must cut his Friday and Saturday classes, including bluebooks, or he is doomed to stay in Ann Arbor until the following Monday. But the choice is really not so difficult. Thursday finds the student re- laxing on the train headed for home. His suitcase is packed with books which will remain unopen- ed until vacation is over and he has returned to "dear Ann Arbor town." Harvard is continuing last year's revival of pre-Christmas activities with "beer holiday dinners and drama. "Each of the seven houses will produce plays incuding Thur- ber's "Male Animal."
