Students purchasing tickets will also have an opportunity to par- ticipate in a woodsman's guessing contest. A 2-foot wide cross-sec- tion of a Western Yellow Pine will be unveiled to every buyer, who will be asked to guess the age of the tree by the number of annual growth rings. Winner of the con- test will be presented with a plaid wool shirt at the dance. Informal Formal "Paul Bunyan," generally known as the "most informal formal of the year," is sponsored by the Foresters' Club. The dance has been held annually for the last decade in honor of the mythical C> giant of the north woods and his faithful blue ox. "Paul Bunyan" guests will dance in the shade of Waterman Woods, where real 30-foot trees will line the ballroom. The red pines to be used have been grown 1from little seedlings by Forestry School students in the University's own plantations in northern Michigan. Picturesque Pictures A photographer will be on hand to take "shots" of couples .posed on opposite ends of a two-man saw. The "Paul Bunyan" committee is under the direction of Keith Truettner, gene ral chairman. Other Foresters' Club members on the dance committee include Ken Boehme and Roy Ahonen, pro- gram; Tex Webster and Gordon Harry, publicity; Bruce Miller and Hil Reynolds, business; Scotty Wainscott and Archie Lubeck, decorations; Bob, Miller, Fern Brooks, Jim Froula and Bob Dor- sett, refreshments; and Walt Reinhardt, concessions. .d STRDIUM BOOTS Qift Problem For Children By MARGARET FROSTIC The local bookstores present the Christmas gift answer for that young nephew or niece of yours that seems to already have every- thing imaginable. For the very young the books that 'feel' are few but intriguing. Young Mary can "Pat the Bunny" each time he appears in the story by Dorothy Kunhardt. The "Little Fur Family" is covered with real fur and the story within is by Margaret Wise Brown. Christmas books abound and are carefully put away to last many Christmases in most cases. Hans Christian Ander- sen's "The Little Fir Tree" achieves its full beauty when read to the young on Christmas morn. "Why the Chimes Rang" by Raymond MacDonald Alden tells the timeless story of per- sonal sacrifice. Among the newer tales is "The Christmas Whale" which relates the story of what happened when Santa's reindeer decided they didn't want to carry Santa on his an- nual round-the-world journey. Animal books include a range as large as the animal kingdom it- self. "Burlap" by Morgan Dennis tells the story of the hound dog who wouldn't hunt. Kipling's tales of "How the Leopard Got His Spots," "How the Camel Got His Hump," and "The Cat That Walked By Himself" present en- joyable stories as well as good lit- erature. A new series by the Encyclo- pedia Britannica features a sci- entific approach to animal study. Photographs acquaint the child with the porcupine and his pals in "Animals of the Woods," with Shep the farm dog in-"Dogs" and with a galaxy of other animals in the nine books of the series. The read- ing,is well suited to the interest of the budding nature lovers. New lights have been added to many of the children's classics. Norman Rockwell has illustrated "Tom Sawyer" so that he becomes even more real than under the pen of Mark Twain. Lewis Car- roll's "Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass" may be purchased both in single copy and double book additions. Among the 'near classics' are] the A. A. Milne books, "Winnie the Pooh," "The House at Pooh Corner" and "When We Were Very Young." Unbirthday pres- ents will be among the more popular entertainments when the young child reads of Pooh's and Piglet's unbirthday party for Eeyore. Three books may be purchased now in Mary Poppins series, "Mary Poppins," "Mary Poppins Comes Back" and "Mary Poppins Opens the Door." To all those who have not met this amazing governess an experience is in store. TIE IDEAL CHIRISTMAS EDITOR-Mrs. Henry C.
