Indiana, Wildcats Pull Upsets) Hoosiers Stop Purdue, 16-14 BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Nov. 22 --(P)-Indiana University's foot- ball Hoosiers convincingly defeat- ed the Purdue Boilermakers today, 16 to 14, in as nerve-twisting a game as any in the 1891-born se- ries. It was an upset on the basis of season records, but there tradi- tionally is no favorite in the intra- state battle for the old oaken bucket. It was the first time in the schools' 50 games that Indianal had won four straight victories, and only a substantial workipg nargin enabled the Hoosiers tol utlast a smashing Purdue rally n the final quarter. loosiers Revitalized Rankling from three defeats this season, Indiana's hopped-up play- ers gave Purdue a thorough go- ing over in the first half and then pushed over two touchdowns in the third quarter. Quarterback Rex Grossman kicked a field goal for good measure at the start of the final period. Finally Click Midway in the last quarter, Pur- due finally began looking like the team that beat Illinois and grap-- pled its way to two quick touch- downs. Grossman's 20-yard field goal turned out to be just enough cushion to save the Hoosiers, and they put their 10th link on the old oaken bucket chain. t . _ a Northwestern Big Nine Standings WLTPct Vlichigan ... 6 Wisconsin .. 3 ' ,rdue ......3 Illinois ... 3 Minnesota .. 3 Iowa ........2 Indiana .... 2 Northwestern 2 Ohio State . . .1 0 2 3 3 3 3 3 4 4 0 0 0 0 1 1 0 1 1.000 .583 540 .500 .500 .417 .417 .333 .230 TP 172 120 108 130 110 79 50 83 47 OP 40 96 101 88 108 136 90 141 99 Brownies Get Priddy in Deal WASHINGTON, Nov. 22-(P)- The Washington Senators today traded second baseman Perry Priddy and "a lot of cash" to the St. Louis Browns for second base- man John Berardino . President Clark Griffith of the Senators declined to say how much cash went to the Browns other than it was "a lot." Huskies Trounce Scrappy Cougars SEATTLE, Nov. 22-(AP)-Little Brooks Biddle skirted the ends and sliced the tackles to lead the Uni- versity of Washington to a 20 to 0 football victory today over a scrappy band of Washington State College Cougars in the season's final game for both teams. Rally Topples Illinois 2 8-13 Northwestern, saving its best per- formance until the last game, to- day closed out its Big Nine football season by vacating the cellar posi- tion with a stunning 28 to 13 tri- umph over highly-favored Illinois. The surprising Wildcats, highly pitched after holding mighty Not- re Dame to a 26-19 win a week ago, scored twice in the second period and racked another pair of touch- downs in the fourth to overcome 6 to 0 and 13 to 7 lead Illinois pro- duced. A "Dad's Day" throng of 52,158 turned out in freezing temperature to watch their Illini bid for run- ner-up spot in the Big Nine title race. But after Illinois marched 64 yards for its first marker in the opening period and then spirung Paul Patterson around end for a 25-yard scoring sprint midway in the second, there was nothing left for the home partisans to cheer about. Russ Steger, tearing off gains alongsthe ground and picking up 14 yards on a pass from Perry Moss, touched off the first Illin- ois touchdown by crashing around end from the two. Northwestern's Don Burson, out- classing Moss in the air, hit Ed Tunnicliff for 25 yards, then Stan Gorski for 20 as the Wildcats moved to the 8. At the outset of the second quarter, Burson fired a five-yard touchdown to Gorski and Jim Farrar booted his first of four extra points. Following Patterson's cut-back scoring run for Illinois, second string halfback Loran Day put Northwestern ahead, 14-13 at half time with a 68 yard runback of Moss' pass. In the third period, Burson toss- ed 41 yards to end Ken Wiltgen but the touchdown was nullified on a Northwestern offside infrac- tion. Frank Aschenbrenner was the Wildcats' demon in an 80-yard march in the fourth period. He and Gasper Perricone herded North- western to the one line from where Farrar eventually squirmed over on fourth down Minutes before the final gun, Aschenbrenner streaked 43 yards to the 10. On the next play he fumbled and Illinois recovered but the Illini bobbled in turn and Bur- son captured the ball onthe 14. It took seven plays for Northwestern to punch across, Aschenbrenner succeeding with a one yard buck. The triumph was Northwestern's second in Conference competi- tion and its third in a total of nine games this season. Chappuis Runs, Passes For 307 Yards in Finale (Continued from Page 1) It took the Wolverines eight plays to march for their final tally. A break set it up. When Bump Elliott tried to make a shoestring catch on a punt from Ohio's Pete Perini, he fumbled the ball toward the Buckeye goal and Dom Tomasi recovered for Michigan on the State 34. A holding penalty on the first play set the Wolverines back to the 47, but that was the last delay. Chappuis hit end Ed McNeil with a 12 yard pass. Two plays later he faded again, sidestepped one Buck- eye and ripped off his own weak side to the 23. He also sparkled on pass de- fense and was one big reason that the Wolverines, for the only time this season, failed to score at least once from beyond the fifty yard line. The other Buckeye star was an end, 190-pound Jameson Crane, who did heavy duty on defense. As usual Crisler's specialists specialized.
