TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1947 T HE MICHIGAN IAILY PAGE THREE I I Student Ice Skating Begins At Coliseum This Week Midwest Star To Direct Club Beginning this week Michigan men and women may "skim o'er the ice" of the University Coliseum from 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays through Friday. The University Ice Skating Club will open a three week membership drive for all skaters and would be skaters including "those who have never skated but wish to begin the right way now" according to Irene Straub, president. Sponsoring the Ice Skating Club and working with the members will be Miss Mary Frances Greschke, 1942 Mid- western Figure Skating Cham- pion and one of the few profes- sional ice skating directors in the Midwest. Miss Greschke staged last year's Ann Arbor Ice Skating Carnival, produced and directed the 1947 Grayling Win- ter Sports Carnival, and was featured in the Saginaw Carni- val last winter. This well known Michigan skat- er spent the past summer at Lake( Placid under the tutelage of Gus- tave Lussi, who has taught and "given the start" to many world famous figure skaters including Dick Button, the present United States Figure Skating Champion, North American Figure Skating Champion and runner up in last year's world Figure Skating Championship; Gretchen Mer- rill, National Women's Figure Skating Champion, and Ilene Seigh, National Artistic Skating Champion. With this professional direc- tion the University Skating Club is planning to put on weekly performances before Hockey Games including solo numbers and choruses. There will be op- portunity for public appearance work for members of every level of skill. While club members will enjoy social skating to the strains of waltz music every afternoon, this co-recreational group will also sponsor not on ice evening parties throughout the year. The afternoon skating ses- sions will combine skating fun with practice and instruction. Patch sections, for figure eight practice, will be blocked off daily and formal instruction goups will be organized after the first week. The Club will conclude their season with a grand finale in the Ann Arbor Ice Skating Carnival co-sponsored with the Ann Arbor Ice Skating Club.
