Columbia Halts A rmy 32-Game Streak W ith Dramatic Fourth-Quarter Drive Wildcats Upset Hoosiers, 7-6 For First Conference Victory NEW YORK, Oct. 25--(P)-A dauntless band of Columbia Lions scored one of the most stunning upsets of gridiron history todayl when they sent Army's eleven tumbling into defeat, 21 to 20, with a spectacular passing attack which scored two touchdowns in the final period and brought gasps Badcrers Earn Easy Victory Giratrd's Fine Play ffils Marquette Hard MADIEON, Wis., Oct. 25-(PI)- Earl (Jui Girard passed for two touchdowns and raced 63 yards for another today to lead Wis- consin to a 35 to 12 victory over its neighborhood rival, Marquette.' After the Eadgers had marched 37 yards on the ground early in the first period, Girard fired a 15-yard pass to halfback Clarence Self for the first touchodown and in the third engineered two more' scores. He tossed a scoring pass to end Charley Zoelle, the play covering 53 yards, and a few minutes later' galloped 63 yards over the goal line through the Marquette team. Quarterback Lisle Blackburn converted five straight points by pl acekicks. Help Fill- The Community Chest from an incredulous crowd of 35,000. Unbeaten in their last 32 games and unscored upon pre- viously this year, the Black Knights from West Point found themselves helpless to stem the Light Blue once Gene Rossides, Columbia's brilliant quarter- back, began throwing bullseyes to an equally brilliant receiver, end Bill Swiacki. Less than seven minutes re- mained to play when the Lions drive 67 yards down the turf of Baker Field to score their third touchdown and Ventan Yablonski, their fullback, cleaved the posts with a kick for the extra point which gave the Cadets their first reverse since Navy turned them back in November, 1943. A desperate attempt by Army to drive to a score in the clas- ing minutes came to nothing when Lou Kusserow of Colum- bia intercepted a pass by Ar- nold Galiffa near midfield. When the game ended and the crowd surged onto the field, the. Lions were deep in Army terri- tory again and giving the rat- tied Cadets no surcease. In all, Coach Lou Little's team completed 20 of 30 passes, and Swiacki caught eight of them for Irish Defeat Iowa Gridders By 21-0 Count SOUTH BEND, Ind., Oct. 25- P)-Irishman Terry Brennan punched over a pair of touch- downs which gave the uncon- quered fighting Irish of Notre Dame a 21-0 triumph today over Iowa. Notre Dame's fourth straight football success was registered chiefly along the ground with pitching Johnny Lujack taking the back seat. The Irish broke loose the 21-year old Brennan and Emil "Red" on scat-back scampers which aided greatly in piling up a total of 223 yards by rushing while outmanned Iowa was tearing off 120. Alfonso Di Marco, Iowa's fine little passer, was continually rushedhby the Irish forwards and when he did have a quiet spell his rifle shots bounced put of the arms of receivers. Bill Walsh captured Bob Smith's fumble on the Iowa 30 to -set up Notre Dame's first period score. Lujack passed nine yards to Jim Martin, Brennan ripped 13 then crashed over. Sitko peeled off 10 and 15 yards at a crack and Brennan capped a 45-yard push by slashing over from the 12 for his second marker in the opening 30 seconds of the second period. Notre Dame's third touchdown started in the final minutes of the .hird period and blossomed after two plays in the finale. 138 yards. In the decisive second half the Light Blue completed a phenomenal 13 of 15 aerials while they were putting on their two great scoring drives of 60 and 67 yards. Columbia's total yardage was 363 to Army's 344. The losers, still badly needing a big league passer to replace Arnold Tuck- er, picked up only 42 yards through the air on four com- pletions. Wayne Eleven Trips Buffalo Tartars Cop Third Success in 4 Tries DETROIT, Oct. 25-(x)-Wayne University's light-footed Tartans. paced by halfback John Hazely, ran a hitherto undefeated Uni- versity of Buffalo eleven into the ground here today for a 33-12 vic- tory. Wayne scored once in each of the first three periods and twieE in the fourth quarter to earn itc third victory in four games this season. Buffalo produced a mid-gam( threat, scoring in the second and third periods. But the bulls saw their five-game winning streak go glimmering when their ground at- tack lost its edge against a sturdy Wayne line. The elusive Hazely, Wayne's top ground gainer all season, led z Tartar attack that gained 28r yards on the ground against onl3 92 for Buffalo. He scored on( touchdown and booted three con- versions. Other Tartar touchdown pro- ducers were Quarterback GenE D'Ambrosio, fullback Virgil Flores and reserve fullback Tino Ventro who scored twice. For the Bulls, hard-running E( Mittelsteadt at fullback led the offensive and scored one touch- down. The other scorer was right halfback Bill Rudick, who scam- pered across the Wayne goal line on a 40-yard pass from Bob Conk. EVANSTON. Ill., Oct. 25-U:1- Indiana's Bob Young pitched bothl touchdowns as Northwestern to-' day upset the Hoosiers, 7 to 6 for the Wildcats' first Big Nine victory in three starts. But then Young's pass1 from deep in his own territory was intercepted by Northwestern's Tom Worthington and returned 36 yards for a touchdown in the third period. Wildcat Quarterback Jim Far- rar cooly place-kicked the ewtra- point to seal the victory, just as he did in Northwestern's 27-26 upset of UCLA on Oct. 4th.
