TELL YOUR FOLKS: Rans Discounts ImpQrtance Of Superiority in Classroom Human qualities, not classroom superiority, were described as the more accurate guide for profes- sional success by Dr. David G. Ryans, associate director of the American Council on Education, mi a lecture yesterday. Present methods reveal academic ability, but they do not indicate whether an individual will be suc- cessful in professional practice, he ,aid. Dr. Ryans,. who has been as- sociated with a project for better selection of teachers for the past eight years, said researchers are seeking more reliable criteria for selecting professional personnel in order to '"increase individual satisfaction and social productiv- ty in our specialized civilization." Revision Urged Citizens were urged to vote "yes" on the 1948 ballot on a state constitutional convention, by Prof. Arthur Bromage, of the po- litical science department, speak- ing before the Ann Arbor Wom- en's Club yesterday. Michigan's constitution needs revamping on four fundamental points, including "legislative or- ganization and apportionment, development of integrated execu- tive management. . . county reor- ganization, and redrafting of the article on finance and taxation,"~ Prof. Bromage said. Only piecemeal adjustments can be made on the existing constitu- tion, and if no convention is called "constitutional problems will re- main in a state of drift," Prof. Bromage asserted. B. Edmonson, of the edu- cation school, said yesterday. Commenting on the announce-. ment of Dr. Eugene B. Elliott, state superintendent of public in- struction, Dean Edmonson said the education school's require- ments had not been relaxed dur- ing the war and no revision is necessary. "Our requirements are relatively higher than other insti- tutions in the state and we are happy to see the high standard re- established." the Dean said. Dr. Elliott's ruling, which will take effect next fall, is not ex- pected to intensify the shortage of teachers. Dean Edmonson ex- plained that the action would ap- ply mostly to rural and elemen- tary school teachers who were granted special certificates as a necessity during the war. "Also, the colleges are turning out more teachers now," he declared.
