Hunt beamed as he cavorted around Ferry Field at yester- day's practice. In his mind, he was happily erasing names from the Wolverine injury list'. - - Tomasi... Mann ... Brieske... Sobeleski. "The boys ought to be in 100 per cent physical condition for Sat- arday's game," he stated. Although Bob Chappuis was out >f uniform yesterday because of a slight ankle injury received in Monday's practice, Hunt indicated that Michigan's leading offensive star of 1946 would be in tip-top shape for today's workout. "It was best to give Bob the day of rest," explained Hunt. Fritz Crisler tested his de- fensive team against a series of Pittsburgh plays "executed" by Ciethaml's jayvee squad yester- day. Ciethaml scouted the Pan- ther's 40-6 defeat at the hands of powerful Notre Dame Satur- day. The Pitt first helm showing against the Irish indicated a strong and steadily improving line, one that is big enough and active enough to cause trouble for any time. In the season's opener. the Panthers fell to Illinois, 14-0. Saturday's game will be the second between the two institu- tions. . The first contest, in 1941, resulted in a 40-0 triumph for Michigan with such players as All-American Bob W e s t f a 11, quarterback George Ciethaml, and tackles Albert Wistert and Merv Pregulman leading the Wolverine attack. Incidentally, Wistert is a brother of Alvin Wistert, present member of the Wolverines at the same position. The 1941 game produced a sec- ond-half scoring burst of five touchdowns, in definite contrast to the 1947 Wolverines showing against Stanford last week. A week ago, the Wolverines piled up four touchdown in eight minu- tes and 33 seconds. In the second half Michigan scored once while Stanford racked up its 13 points. Crisler is expected to continue his liberal use of players against Pittsburgh. Against Michigan State and Stanford, the Wolverin- es used 81 men, 41 against Michi- gan State and 40 against Stan- ford. Long gains and tentative touch- downs were numerous, but the de- fensive squad also had its say as ht eline tossed the runners on oc- casion before they got back to the scrimmage attack. Perfection of ball-handling technique was stressed to pre- vent a repetition'of the back- field miscues which cost the Wolverine squad several scoring opportunities in Saturday's con- test with Grand Rapids. Assist- ant Coach Gib Holgate stressed the fact that the Wolverine gridders have had little chance to develop their offense until now since their main duties have been to work defensively against the varsity. Since several of the Michigan State varsity players have been excluded from the trip to Wash- ington, they probably will bol- ster State's jayvee squad in its appearance here.
