The Wolverine attack was high- lighted by three falls scored by Bob Betzig, Captain Bill Court- right, and Hugh Mack. Jim Smith, Phil Carlson, and Maurice Smith added three points apiece to the Michigan cause through decisions. Michigan's up and coming 155- pounder Bob Betzig turned in one of the most colorful performances of the evening. Betzig scored two near falls in the first period and came right back in the second to pin Northwestern's John Coleman in 1:44 flat. Coleman was stop- ped cold in the final period when Betzig pulled another fall. 'Corby' Fells His Man Captain Bill Courtright's vic- tory over the Wildcat's Bud Ivy in the 165-pound clash was almost a repeat of Betzig's match. "Cor- ky" was master of the situation at all times, pinning his opponent in 1:11 of the second period and returning in the third to flatten him again in 1:12 and cop five points for the Maize and Blue. Wolverine Hugh Mack was the only entrant to score a first-period fall. Mack launched an aggressive attack right from the start and pinned Northwestern's Walter Sherman in 2:39. A newcomer to the Michigan wrestling scene, Jim Smith, com- peted for the Maize and Blue at 128-pounds and earned a timely 6-1 decision over his Wildcat ad- versary, Henry Achmidt. Smith iens Second Maurice Smith scored his second victory of the season in defeating the NU 136-pounder Nyles Tay- lor by. a 9-7 margin. Smith, a colorful driving competitor, put his win on ice with a one-minute riding time advantage. Phil Carlson appeared for the Wolverines in the 145-pound bout and won the decision over North- western's Don Guier by the com- fortable score of 7-4. 'Cats Score on Falls Northwestern's points were earned through falls in the 121 and heavyweight matches. Michi- gan's flyweight, Byron Dean, was forced under by his Wildcat ad- versary, George Ralas, just a scant two seconds before the final horn. With the Wolverine victory in the bag, Coach Cliff Keen put 175- pounder Ward Peterson in for heavyweight Dan Dworsky, who is suffering from an arm injury, and was slated to appear only in an emergency. "Pete" was out- weighed 30 pounds by Wildcat Dick Eggers who forced him to the mat in the second period. , ,I W L Pts. OP Pct.
