Courtright Pins Puhal; Dworsky Clinches Win Michigan's varsity wrestlers ov- erpowered Ohio University 17 to 9 last night at the Yost Field in their season's debut. The Ohioans offered quite a threat throughout the first half of the evening but the Wolverines assumed control after the 155- pound match andretained it for the rest of the meet. Stack Wins for Ohio Loren Dean appeared for Michi- gan in the 121-pound match. Dean led briefly in the second period but his experienced opponent Dick Stack proved too much for him and won the decision 9 to 3. Ohio assumed a 3-0 lead at this point. A returning letterman from last season, John Allred wrestled for the Maize and Blue at 128 pounds against Jim Spencer of Ohio. All- red fought a very close match to outpoint his adversary 11 to 6 to add three points to his team's scoring, knottingit up at three all. Smith Cops Decision Michigan's Maurice Smith took the offensive early in the 136- pound clash against Ohio's Tom Morgan and maintained the upper hand throughout the match. "Smitty"- outclassed his opponent 15 to 7 and pushed the Wolver- ines into a 6-3 lead. Wolverine Phil Carlson grappled with John Kulazinka of Ohio in the 145-pound match which turn- ed out to be the closest contest of the evening. Both men had four points at the end of the final period but Kulazinka led on rid- ing time and won the decision 5-4 tieing the team score again at six all. Michigan's Bob Betzig turned in a beautiful performance in defeat- ing Ohio's Wally Shultz in the 155-pound clash. This was Bet- zig's first appearance for the Maize and Blue. Betzig's timely win pushedthe Wolverines ahead 9 to 6 Courtright Scores Only Pin . Bill "Corky" Courtright, Michi- gan captain and NCAA 155-pound champ, turned in his usual stellar performance, pinning his Ohio ad- versary Pete Puhal after 40 sec- onds of the final period of the 155-pound match. This was the only fall registered in the meet and boosted the Wolverine's total to 14 points. MikerUlyshen, Michigan's 175- pounder dropped a very close match to Ohio's Zeb Zedneck by a slim score of 2-0. Ohi's victory in this brackett put them back in the running for a pin in the final heavyweight match would have given them a tie. Keen Substitutes Dworsky Coach Cliff Keen, playing on the safe side, substituted Dan Dwor- sky in place of Ward Peterson. Peterson, a regular 175-pounder was to have wrestled for Dwor- sky, who has been suffering from a head, cold, in the event that evrything was all wrapped up for Michigan by the time the heavy- wight match rolled around. Dworsky handled his adversary nicely and outpointed Ohio's Bill Hess 8 to 3 to clinch a Wolverine victory by a safe 17-9 margin. Read and Use The Daily Classifieds! It was the Purdue Boilermakers' last test before starting their Western Conference schedule and their fifth victory in six pre-league Purdue, holding a two-game edge over Notre Dame in their 18 previous meetings, set an early pace tonight that the Irish couldn't match and ran up a 17-to-3 lead in the first five min- utes. Notre Dame came back to melt the Purdue advantage to five points at the half, 29 to 24, but the Riveters expanded their ad- vantage to 11 points in the sec- ond period. Harry Holiday, National AAU 100-meter and 300-yard individual medley champion, led the assault on district records clipping more than three seconds off the stand- ard in the 100-yard back stroke event as he completed the dis- tance in 1:02.4. His time erased a record set by Charley Barker also of Michigan. Dick Weinberg turned in a 0:- 54.4 performance in the 100-yard freestyle test to erase the former record set in 1941 by South Amer- ican champion, Paulo Silva, and Bob Sohl completed the record list when he slashed four seconds from the record for the 100-yard breast stroke. Sohl's winning time was 1:02.8. Coach Matt Mann's crack Mich- igan mermen grabbed first place points in all nine events and sec- ond place in all but two of the seven individual events. Bill Jacobson, who took the worst physical beat- ing of any of the Michigan players, also came through with two goals. MacDonald Good Again MacDonald gave another credi- table performance, while Captain Connie Hill again was the Wolver- ines' main stalwart on defense along with George Balestri. Queens' captain and center Jerry Wagar, who has always been tough against Michigan, was the visitors' offensiveikingpin scoring two of their three tallies. In the opening minutes of play, Queens' goalie Norm Urie, who played instead of Dave Wood, who held the Wolverine sextet to two goals Friday night, stopped Mac- Millan's stick with his nose in a scramble in front of their net. After holding up the contest for several minutes, Urie was able to return to the nets but was unable to stop Michigan's onslaught. Few Shots in First The first period mover very slowly with each sextet getting few shots on goal. Both team's defensive strength was exempli- fied as MacDonald had 12 stops and Urie but six saves. Lorne Smith, Queens defense- man, broke the ice at 18:40 with a loft screen shot from in front of the blue line, 30 feet out. Mac- Donald didn't s t, the puck until it was in the net as it went through a maze of plagers. Jacobson Ties Game Michigan tied it up at 4:21 of the second period on Jacobson's first goal. The play started when Al Renfrew passed out to defense- man Bob Marshall whose shot was deflected off Jacobson's stick into the short side of the net. Bolestir countered on a seven shot at 10:32. MacMillan initiated the existing final stanza's scoring by tallying at 5:42 from Hill. This was the best goal of the night from the spectator's point of view.- The Wolverine -captain skated through and fought off practically the en- tire Queens sextet but controlled the puck and passed to MacMil- lan just in front, who put it in the open corner of the net. Jacobson's last marker was made at :0 3after he took a pass from Marshall at center ice, out- skated the Queens defense, and shot the puck through Urie's legs while Chuck Hews, defenseman, was practically on his back all the way in. MacMillan's second goal at 18:15 and Renfrew's tally 36 seconds later ended Mi(higan's scoring for the night, while Wagar's two markers were sandwiched in at 8:03 and 19:35, respectively.
