THE MICHIG-AN DAILY SUNDAY, JANUARY 12, 1047, Michigan Teams To Participate in Five Con ference Clash. es in Week Cagers, Puckmen Will See Action Twice; Matmen Entertain Northwestern Saturday ! :r la -- Michigan athletic teams are in for a busy time during the next week with five major Western Con- ference collisions on the schedule which will see the basketball and hockey teams in action twice and the wrestlers once. En route home from the Min- nesota game at Minneapolis, Coach Ozzie Cowles' basketball squad will appear Monday evening in a re- match with Northwestern Univer- sity at Evanston, Ill. Next Satur- day night the Wolverines square off with Purdue at Yost Field House for their second conference clash of the week. Wildcats Lose Key Men Against Northwestern the Wol- verines rate a fair chance of re- leating their Jan. 4 performance here in which they scored a 39-31 upset. The chance will depend on how much the Wildcats miss for- ward Bill Stricklen and reserve guards Bob Hughes and Bob Mac- taggert, who were declared schol- astically ineligible. Michigan, on the other hand, may be handicapped if Gerritt Fs} K y OZZIE COWLES ... Faces a busy week during which he was top scorer with 11 points. Purdue Rates High Although Michigan ranked one notch above the seventh-place Purdue quintet in last year's Big Nine standings, Coach Mel Taube's Boilermakers have a re- turned veteran personnel that is highly regarded in the league. Coach Vic Heyliger's hockey team will face off against its ma- jor conference rival, Minnesota, in the first of a four-game series Fri- day and Saturday nights. A two- game return match is booked at Minneapolis Feb. 14 and 15. Michigan Has Unofficial Title Inasmuch as Minnesota and Michigan this season sport the only two conference hockey clubs, outcome of their battles deter- mines the unofficial Big Nine championship. Last year Michi- gan won two,-tied ope and lost one in the Gopher series to snatch the, laurel. Meanwhile, next Saturday night wrestling Coach Cliff Keen's squad will entertain Northwest- ern's wrestlers, following the Pur- due Michigan basketball game. The swimming team is unsched- uled until Feb. 1, when it goes to Lafayette, Ind., to compete with Purdue. Twelve Named. To Walker Cup Team Berths NEW YORK, Jan. 11-(IP)-A dozen amateur golfers, nine of whom will be charged with the, responsibility of returning the Walker Cup to thiscountry, were selected today by the U. S. Golf Association which also decided to conduct its future National tour- naments entirely on a match play basis. Meeting in annual session, the USGA named these players as a nine-man team to meet a picked squad of British Amateurs at St. Andrews, Scotland, May 16 and 17, in the first Walker Cup matches since 1938: The men selected were: Ted Bishop, Bud Ward, Dick Chapman, Willie Turnesa, Smiley Quick, Fred Kammer, Cary Middlecoff, and Frank Stranahan. Francis Ouimet was named non- playing captain. Ba ylor U' Signts New Grid Coach WACO, Tex., Jan. 11-(")-Bob Woodruff, line coach at Georgia Tech, today was named head coach at Baylor University. Woodruff signed a three -year contract at an undisclosed salary. He said that he would bring three other Georgia Tech coaches with him to be his assistants but did not name them. The announcement was made by a statement signed by Alva Bryan, chairman of the Baylor Athletic Committee, and five members. LAST NIGHT'S SCORES Minnesota 48, Michigan 37 Iowa 61, Ohio State 35. He suf- badly sprained left ankle last Northwestern game, By GEORGE VETTER. Leaves were not the only things turned over for the New Year. The Yost Field House running track underwent a 14-day face- lifting and emerged with a new ashen complexion. In the first major recondi- tioning since the track was built, an entire new surface was laid. Some two inches of the old top side were remo-ved to clear way for a batch of new and springier cinders. Generations of Michi- gan thinclads had long since pounded the original layer into srumbs. Two carloads of a special high- class "North Shore" cinders were imported for the job. Advertised as an "activated ash" for better bounce and longerstrides, it was not quite up to snuff. It all had to be sifted, and by the time they task was finished only one car- load of usable material was left. Undoubtedly the high clinker count can be attributed to at- tempts at coal scimping. The track team's reaction to the new course is varied. One caught the general attitude by a "Soft Shoulder" sign posted on the back stretch. The reno- vated surface is a trifle flabby, and while the lads don't exactly do a soft-shoe shuffle around the turns they do manage a good imitation. The bed of the track, under- neath the new layer is sound, however, so things should im- prove. As every runner knows, a firm foundation is essential to a. good curve. A little time and a few tons of pressure ought to do the trick. The only unusual result of the present mealy surface was a thrown shoe by quarter-miler George Shepherd. As he plowed around the last turn at a recent practice, the suction proved too great for his loosely-tied spikes. His might shoe pulled off with a squish, but a wide-awake spec- tator snatched it from the whirling wake before it disap- peared from sight. Shepherd finished the race with a unilue crab-like stride. But all in all, the Wolverine trackmen are showing up well as mudders. The splattering is taken right in stride, with the runner in the rear getting a little extra in the eye. They wink out a couple of specks of dirt, button their spats, and prepare for the sedimental journey. Here's mud in your eye DixonRanks Sixth in Ves tern Ten iis CHICAGO, Jan. 11-(P)-The Western Lawn Tennis Association today ranked Seymour Greenberg of Chicago and Shirley Fry of Ak- ron, Ohio, its top men's and women's singles players in 1946 for the second straight year. Michigan Coach Bob Dixon rated sixth spot in the male rankings. Gardner Lamned of Chicago was ranked the no. 2 masculine play- em, while Fred Kovaleski of 1Ham- tramck, hMich., was listed third; John Kriet of Chicago, fourth; and Charles Samson of South Bend, Ind., former Notre Dame star', fifth.
